I voted for this poll years ago, but don’t think I commented. A very tough choice. Thats Entertainment and Down In The Tubestation at Midnight are the most iconic, but not so strong singles. Strange Town was my vote, as it just flows so well, I preferred Dreams of Children to Going Underground, likewise Precious over Town Called Malice. The closest others to Strange Town were Absolute Beginners, another belter that just flows so brilliantly, and the Beatles (Taxaman) influenced Start!

Splendid episode. Somehow a video rental shop seems very Daley, particularly as he's pirating copies back at base. And what a cast... Ian McShane is inch perfect as a swaggery gangland boss, Brian Blessed is similarly excellent in the role of a cop who tiptoes along the line of good/bad guy, and Ken Campbell surprisingly underplays a character for a change, and it's right on the nose. A very entertaining episode, even if it disappointingly doesn't follow up on the end of the previous episode (Terry getting that job at the car showroom). Should have been the way Terry left the show really, walking away from 10 years working for Arthur, rather than going to Australia, especially with him going to a more prestigious job at a proper dealership and an easier time than his role under Arthur.

Sad,sad news. Heard the announcement on BBC6 Music yesterday afternoon. Such an influential band, as said - given months to live in 2013. Oil City Confidential is a masterpiece.

He will be known for lots, but he had a memorable role in Minder as coiffeur to the Syrup of Figs and Albert Chisholm. Indeed, played his part in one of the very finest episodes of Minder . RIP Mr Coltrane

I'd argue that with the exception of 'Fatal Impression' the scripts in series 7 were probably better than those in series 6, certainly far funnier. I really like this episode. What series 6 has going for it is the mid 80s vibe. Eps like 'Arthur is Dead', 'From Fulham With Love' are way worse than series 7 for me. Meic Povey told me in the final series the number of pink pages (script amendments) were way higher than usual as you can read elsewhere on the forum maybe due to unnecessary interference from the script editor. If I were critical of series 7, apart from 'Fatal Impression' and 'Officer & Car Salesman' being weak I think it suffers from Terry not in a Capri, likely due to Dennis Waterman's driving ban. Series 7 is right up there for me. Great post, and agreed - I also forgot about the driving ban and wondered why you don’t see his Capri, or him driving!

This script could have easily fitted in to the 'Ray Daley' era, as Terry was very much a secondary figure and Waterman was not looking his best in my opinion. Probably all the stress being married to Rula Lenska! I only gave this a 3/5 and I felt this was just 'Minder' on auto pilot, despite a good supporting cast. Terry was increasingly a 'Go-Fer' as opposed to a 'Min-der'. In 'Re-minder', Waterman said that towards the end, they (Euston), were letting scripts in that would have normally been rejected (Similar to what happened in The Professionals). I wouldn't say 'Fiddler... was a bad script, but it isn't taking any risks. At all. Some fans love Series 7, though it is a mixed bag. For my money, this was one too many for Waterman. Euston would have better off ending at Series 6 - as was intended (I remember reading Mark Lawson's obituary of the show in The Guardian) and then spinning Daley off into his own show instead of still using the 'Minder' brand. Yes, Tel is starting to 'fill out' by series 7 and starting to look like he needs a minder himself but the seventh series has some great episodes for me and it's great to see the changing face of the city from the rough and ready streetscapes of the early series. Yes, first broadcast in 1989, I think - despite being filmed in 88. As you say - a completely different look about them .

Watched this in its entirety for first time in a good few years, as myself and my good friend Barry the Book watched it to death, after videoing a repeat as part of an ITV Remembers Minder in early 1989, not that it was a bad thing by any means! The amount of great moments, one liners and Arthur expressions are countless! Absolutely brilliant. The amount of lines that we also used in general conversation are also worth noting.

Welsh rugby international Phil Bennet past away earlier this month. I've just been watching some footage of his career playing for Llanelli, Wales and The Barbarians. Bennet initiated the move which led to what is recognised as the best Try ever scored in Rugby Union whilst playing for The Barbarians vs The All Blacks in 1973(?). Absolute legendary player when the game was at its best for the spectator. RIP. Great words and very well said mate. The player was an absolute legend amongst legends, and led me to maintain my continued preference to follow Wales over England, as a Celtic Cornishman anyway. apparently his team talk before a game against England was completely inspired .

It looks like ITV4 are doing a tribute to Dennis this weekend with several minder then sweeney episodes but I don’t know if there will be an actual tribute show as such They have hand picked some episodes that he is probably seen as more of the main character. ”What Makes Shamy Run” would have been a good one, also, for Sweeney - wish they’d selected “Messenger of The Gods” over “Hears an Minds” but still, a good tribute day to him.

Very sad news. ITV should clear some of their schedule this week and show some of the hugely popular series that Dennis made for showing on ITV. R.I.P. Dennis - we'll all continue watching you for as long as we can. I thought the same, they shown a more ‘in tribute’ showing of Professionals when Lewis Collins passed away (passing around a bottle of champagne at the end) , along with when George Cole passed away ( the close up at the end of Fiddler On The Hoof) if I remember correctly

I only found out this morning, when my Brother told me at work. I was shocked, I am not aware of recent health issues. Obviously led quite a hard life, I was only watching one of the series 7 shows a couple of weeks ago, thinking he is one of the only ‘original actors’ from the this era of TV, along with Martin Shaw, then this. As other people have commented, grew up watching him in Minder, and Sweeney repeats . Another unique character taken.

the now ex Mrs yoyo said she had seen Jethro live years ago She said she spent the entire evening shaking her head at his jokes and he kept on glaring at her! Never saw him live myself but people that I know who have, say that he would pick a member or two of the audience and really give them a hard time. Also from what I've been told, his live shows were very 'blue' to the point of being quite offensive and personal to anyone he happened to pick on in the audience, not my cup of tea tbh. Well said mate. Always a bit of an enigma - never seen anything in his one dimensional ‘comedy’… personally, I wouldnt have crossed the road to watch him, and would draw my curtains if he was in my garden.

He was an important voice when all the most prominent leaders of the anti-apartheid movement in SA were either imprisoned, murdered or in exile. He was very brave in stepping in to prevent mobs killing people during demonstrations which got out of control. He was later very critical of the corruption and self enrichment of the ANC in government. A giant of the 20 century. RIP. Well said, and yes - a very robust character. We won’t see the likes of people like this again.

I agree re Carole Ashby’s accent, however her asthmatics more than compensate. Her accent's terrible, but what with Imogen being so handy and er...physically striking, I reckon she might have made a better replacement Minder than nephew Ray. I think she was mainly on the programme for her legs!….
