Very distinctive guitar style and stage presence. When interviewed always came across as a genuine eccentric, in the best way of course. I liked the story Lemmy told about him (with some bemusement) about his preference for taking amphetamines before he went to bed.

A legend. Was given months to live years ago, but a fan who happened to be a surgeon reckoned he could help him where others hadn't. Took a tumour the size of a football out and he went on for years more. RIP Wilko.

A sad loss , I was a big fan and had seen him play live on countless times since my teens. The King of Canvey returns to the sea...
RIP Sir

Listened to 'Down by the Jetty' last night. Great album... and in mono too. Can't have been many bands in the mid '70s purposefully putting out records in mono... and yet it works, creates a kind of wall of sound in a way that you sometimes don't get with stereo. Early Shadows and Beatles albums in mono are sometimes better than the stereo mixes. For a band like Dr. Feelgood, it was a good call.
Oil City Confidential - a brilliant documentary that I saw on BBC FOUR about ten years ago. I started to watch it, mostly out of curiosity, and was still sitting there in the chair, having not moved an inch, 90 minutes later. It's riveting. I bet they show it again soon. If so... recommended.

Sad,sad news. Heard the announcement on BBC6 Music yesterday afternoon. Such an influential band, as said - given months to live in 2013. Oil City Confidential is a masterpiece.

A character indeed, and surprising that he left Dr Feelgood before their greatest chart success, and joined Ian Dury & The Blockheads after theirs Jarvis Cocker jumped on stage at The Brits 1996 to mock Michael Jackson's fake 'messiah' imagery, and this gained some hostility from corporate aspects of the music industry. Wilko as a fellow maverick musician sent a strong message of support to Jarvis. R.I.P. Wilko Johnson. P.S. yes, the 'Oil City Confidential' documentary is a great watch.
