Variety reports (and confirmed by his official Twitter account) the death of the legendary photographer who was responsible for many iconic photographs of musicians in the 70s, including album covers for Queen (II), Iggy Pop (Raw Power) and Lou Reed (Transformer). The latter two were shot on consecutive nights at the same London venue. He also photographed David Bowie many times and directed the video for The Jean Genie whilst on tour with him in the USA in 1973.
RIP.

He was very much the voice of football on ITV for me in the 70s and 80s. He commentated on some highly memorable Liverpool games, not least the European Cup 1/4 final against St Etienne in ‘77 when Davey Fairclough scored a late winner. He, Brian Moore and Hugh Johns were masters of their craft.
RIP.

The legendary composer has died at the age of 84 after battling pneumonia. We will all have heard some of his compositions at one time or another, whether it be the themes from Countdown, Grange Hill, Dave Allen or Channel 4 News but he was also responsible for so many library tracks that were used in films and TV or sampled in rap tracks.
RIP.

My dad always raved about him and said he was better than Ian Rush so he must have been good.
RIP to a Liverpool legend.

I’ve merged the two threads we had running. I seem to remember that he was known as 'Mr Bollard' at one time because of his campaign against car parking in Hampstead. Does anyone else remember this? I can’t find anything about it in a cursory search.

Toby Hadoke has reported the sad news that Morris Perry has died. He was another actor who will be well known on here for Minder, The Professionals, The Sweeney (and Sweeney!), Special Branch and Doctor Who amongst a host of other appearances.
RIP.

Only saw him play in a charity match after he’d retired but so many people have said that he was one of, if not the, greatest strikers of all time and his record certainly lends credence to that. Loved his show with The Saint.

Sadly, the actor probably known for appearing as ‘Boycie’ in Only Fools And Horses has died at the age of 79 after a battle with cancer. He will also be known on here for his appearances in The Sweeney, Z Cars, Thriller and Doctor Who (The Seeds Of Doom). He recently did the commentary on a documentary about Serbia which led to him being given honorary Serbian citizenship.
RIP.

A great character actor with some memorable roles in The Avengers, Department S, The Sweeney and of course, Minder. A sad loss.

Yes, I didn’t realise how close to real life his character was in The Wire - minus the killings, obviously. There was an article I read where he said he’d wake up in an abandoned apartment block after a 3 day drug binge with no recollection of how he got there and could just about remember trading his mobile phone for drugs because he was skint. The dealers actually used to call him Omar.

He was probably my favourite character in The Wire and was absolutely superb. A very sad loss.

The other thing about that story is the time of day - it was around 5am and Watts had been asleep in bed when Jagger had made the comment. According to Richards, when Watts arrived at Jagger’s room, he was immaculately dressed in a suit, shirt and tie and was even wearing after shave.

I suppose it shouldn’t have been much of a surprise after last week’s announcement that he wouldn’t be takin part in the forthcoming tour but it was still a shock. Always seemed like a sensible bloke compared to the others and was happy just to stay in the background.

Only saw 58 but I’m not sure I saw it as soon as it was announced.
I always enjoyed seeing him on Cats and QI - a very funny man who didn’t go for the cheap laughs. Mark Lamarr was really emotional talking about him on the radio earlier and he was held in very high regard by his contemporaries. A very sad loss.

Without the saturation coverage we get these days he was a little before my time, but I’ve always been aware of how good he must have been - his goal scoring record was phenomenal.

The legendary bassist from ZZ Top has died at the age of 72. Not many bands stay together for 50 years but he, Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard managed it. Eliminator was one of the albums of the 80s and they were very impressive live.

I used to absolutely detest being forced to do stuff like this. It didn’t have any positive effect on working relationships and everyone saw it as a total waste of time, which could have been better spent actually doing some proper work.

Has anyone ever met someone who actually talks in Monty's comedy Jewish accent? They always use it on tv! Yes, I have. It was in Stamford Hill and I was thinking at the time that he reminded me of someone but it was only later that I realised it was Mont. Schmeitz!

Boris Johnson said he "inspired the lives of countless young people". A shame he didn’t bother to comb his hair before he came out to make such a serious announcement. What a sack of sh*t he looked. RIP Prince Philip and sincere condolences to the Queen.
