Another Bond villain gone - this time Mr Big/Kananga from Live And Let Die. He was also brilliant as Parker in Alien and appeared on TV in Mannix, Hill Street Blues, The A Team, Homicide: Life On The Street (in which he had regular role) and was in a great TV movie which featured Richard Bradford called Badge Of The Assassin.
RIP.

I remember the Minter fight - he’d been built up as a real champion but Hagler showed that he was in a different class. One of the sport’s all-time greats.

Probably best known on here for her role as Sara Prince in Stoppo Driver, the actress has sadly died at the age of 75 from a brain tumour. I know her from her role as Carla Faversham in one of the very best Man In A Suitcase episodes, Burden of Proof. She also appeared in The Avengers, Danger Man and The Persuaders! amongst others. I always thought she was very talented and was surprised that she didn’t appear in many more productions. www.theguardian.com/stage/2021/mar/04/nicola-pagett-obituaryRIP.

Met him a couple of times and he was exactly how you would want him to be - warm, friendly and humorous. He lived in the same house in Childwall for many years and was always happy to chat with fans. A lot of sports broadcasters owe a huge debt to him and Jimmy Greaves for the way they presented what was essentially a highlights and preview show.
RIP.

He was certainly in Jake And The Fatman and I had it in the back of my mind that he moved over there, but can’t say for certain.

Another familiar face although the name may not be well known - he appeared as Jake Jenkins in The Sweeney episode ‘Faces’, as Hymer in The Professionals episode ‘Look After Annie’ and most memorably for me, as Lomax in Take-Over - one of the best Tara King episodes of The Avengers. He also appeared in The Spy Who Loved Me, The Eagle Has Landed and Shoestring. He sadly died of Covid in December but his passing has only just been announced.

I can vividly remember watching his 145 break at The Crucible which was the tournament’s highest until Cliff Thorburn’s 147. He was always a steady player, a bit like Eddie Charlton or Perrie Mans, but undoubtedly very talented.

This news has only just come to light but the actor and writer passed away on New Year’s Eve last year. Maybe not a household name but will be best known to fans of Minder as the writer of two top notch episodes in ‘You Lose Some, You Win Some’ and ‘The Old School Tie’. He also wrote for The Professionals, CATS Eyes, Paul Temple, The Avengers, CI5: The New Professionals, Inspector Morse and created Children Of The Stones. He also appeared in The Saint, The Persuaders!, The Baron, Danger Man and in several episodes of The Avengers to name but a few.

Seemed like a nice guy used to look at another forum which for the life of me can’t remember but he would put up a lot of interesting posts. RIP Could be the old Britmovie forum? He was often on there around ten years ago before it changed hands and moved server. He was also on Roobarb’s and The Mausoleum Club. I was last in contact with him just under a year ago when I spotted him in the first episode of Fox, which he was pleased to hear about as it was one he’d forgotten.

Sad news that legendary extra and stand-in Harry Fielder has died at the age of 80. He appeared in many of our favourite shows including Minder, The Sweeney, The Professionals, Man In A Suitcase and was a regular stand-in for Mike Pratt on Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased).

Felix, just remember most travelling car shots are filmed with the car on a special low loader, built for filming purposes, so some actors "acting" as well as driving probably don't give the driving as much attention. On Minder, we couldn't afford the all-singing dancing purpose-built film low loader, so we adapted our own one, the lowest trailer we could find and a spare Jaguar body, we then removed the wheels so the car appeared lower, strapped it down to the trailer, removed the engine so the engine bay was empty to allow the Director the operator, focus puller and the Camerman to be in the bay. Also, we built a lighting rig to illuminate the actors. The best thing was; that George and Dennis were both good at acting and driving at the same time. I've never noticed De Niro's driving expertise thing, but next time I'll have a look. Normally when car shots are in action I'm busy watching the backgrounds to look for continuity etc. Plus the height of letterboxes etc. The downside of being an Ex film technician comes with a lot of baggage that does sometimes spoil a film. Although, as my wife says occasionally when we watch a movie, you must have enjoyed that one as you never mentioned what they were doing wrong. I’m the same, Nick - driving is my area of expertise so I know how the body reacts to G-force at high speed when steering and how much steering you would need to apply to achieve a manoeuvre - so I can usually tell when someone is doing it for real and it was obvious to me that De Niro wasn’t. Something like that does take me out of the film for a moment as you describe. Fair play to you and your Minder crew though, there were very few occasions when it didn’t look like George or Dennis were actually driving in the series

He even did the smallish stunts in Smiley's People as well, but for Ronin alone 10/10 RIP. The car stunts in Ronin were brilliant but for someone who is one of the greatest actors that ever lived, I’ve never seen anyone look less convincing driving a car than De Niro. (As I’m sure most people are aware, the cars were actually right hand drive and fitted with false steering wheels in front of the passenger seats so it appeared that the actors were driving).

Oddly, I was only reading an interview with him in an issue of Record Collector from last year just a couple of days ago where he mentioned his health problems and how he was relying on crowd funding for treatment. One of those whose name is probably lost on most people but the musical world would have been entirely different without him.

In view of these latest restrictions surrounding Covid, as of tomorrow Book Junior has online lessons with the involvement of teachers and classmates from 9am to 3pm Monday to Friday. Personally I can't see this happening or working but I'm happy to be proved wrong. Ours has been an utter disaster - tasks that should literally take 2 minutes are taking 20 because of there being 24 people involved. Plus, I’m supposed to assist my 7 year old autistic daughter with her online session at the same time as helping my 4 year old with her online lesson. How is that supposed to work? (That’s not a criticism of the teachers by the way, I know they’re doing their best).

At the risk of name dropping, I met her briefly in 2004 (I think) as I was speaking to Dale Winton. She was meeting him for lunch and as she was walking towards us in true Babs style, all I could hear in my head was the Carry On music. She was great and more than happy to chat for a bit. I must have seen that clip of her approaching Sid James in the hospital bed as he’s having his blood pressure taken at least half a dozen times today and it still makes me laugh every time.

Ironic that he should die on the same date as that other footballing genius, and for me the greatest player of all time, George Best. They were similar in many ways although you could never accuse Best of cheating. Well, not on the pitch anyway.
