Terribly sad news - probably our greatest ever ‘keeper and I was gutted when he left. I was on The Kop when he returned for the first time as Spurs’ goalkeeper and he got the most amazing reception. I always thought he was better than Shilton and was surprised that he didn’t get more England caps.
RIP.

Ray Clemence was a über-cool goalie and top inspirational bloke, even for 80s kids like me.
RIP to a legend

I had the Yellow England Shirt with the 2 Black Stripes down the arms when I was a lad, as worn by Ray and Shilts at the time.....

Sad news, he and Pat Jennings seemed to be around forever when I was a kid and always remember them two along with Shilton in Panini sticker albums when I was a kid, when other clubs seemed to change their goalies more regular.
Only 72 as well, no age at all these days.
RIP Ray

He was a simply brilliant goalkeeper and part of one the greatest Liverpool sides ever. He will be remembered with a great deal of affection.

Very sad news indeed. When I was little I wanted to be a goalkeeper and had a Ray Clemence goalkeeping coaching book which I read hundreds of times. He was my hero as much as Kenny Dalglish. I had the privilege of watching him play several times and the 28 clean sheets and only 16 goals conceded in 42 games in the 1978-79 season is unlikely ever to be beaten. Obviously I considered him superior to Peter Shilton and was always disappointed when Ron Greenwood alternated him with Shilton. He still got about 70 caps and would have got a lot more in any other era, and if he hadn't retired from international football when he left Liverpool for Tottenham. I remember being shocked when he was diagnosed with cancer at a young age many years ago, and as he returned to coaching I guess I thought he'd beaten it. Clearly not . RIP.

The thing about Ray was that he left Liverpool because he wanted to test himself a bit more. He’d just won a third European Cup and had won league titles, the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup and he thought it was too easy for him - and not in a big headed way. It wasn’t about more money, it was simply about proving himself at another club and it was something he managed do the following season with Spurs as they retained the FA Cup. You don’t get that often these days.

Purely by chance, yesterday I found my programme from Clem’s return to Anfield in May 1982 and there’s hardly any mention of him in it at all - apart from a reference to him having already faced us in the League Cup Final and his name on the teamsheet on the back:

o/t and I know these programmes were only indicative as to the actual team (although the internet reckons it was right) but this looks like a very unusual 5-3-2 formation with Alan Hansen wearing number 10?!

I think Lawrenson played in midfield when required but was obviously able to slot into a back 5 when needed. Certainly Neal and Kennedy got further forward than usual in that game and others when using that system. That goal from Hoddle, though - absolutely stunning. I can remember screaming when he got the ball to close him down as he could hit them from there but strangely, not one of the players listened to me.

That Spurs side wasn’t too shabby either - that was a great team.

IIRC the first match Ray played for Spurs was away at Middlesbrough, and I happened to be in the stand behind the goal.
R.I.P. Ray Clemence.

I wasn't there that day in 1982 but I was there four years before when Liverpool beat Spurs 7-0 at Anfield. I don't think Ray had too much to do that day.
