One of the greatest goalscorers ever to play the game, Jimmy Greaves will be fondly remembered by older people for his incredible goalscoring record and by my generation for his TV work. He was also an excellent after-dinner speaker by all accounts.
Of course he will also be remembered for losing his place in the 1966 World Cup team which certainly contributed to his personal problems in the 1970s but that should not overshadow his achievements in the domestic game or at international level where his scoring ratio was second to none, mostly against quality opposition in competitive games rather than today's plethora of meaningless friendlies.
I recently saw an excellent BT Sport documentary "Greavsie" which demonstrated what an amazing record he had, especially in the days when forwards got no protection from referees and the pitches were terrible. Well worth a watch if you haven't seen it. He withdrew from public appearances following a stroke in 2015 and sadly seems to have struggled badly in his final years. RIP Jimmy.

So Greavsie goes soon after the Saint. Great fun on Saturday lunchtimes back when the football industry was a fraction of its size today and S&G was essential viewing to see what was happening.
Great goalscoring record too. Saw an interview with him on the Big match revisited on ITV4 recently from 1980. When he was emerging from the doldrums. Like so many of that generation Brian Moore asked him what he was dabbling in now, and he'd started writing his column but was still getting involved in run of the mill stuff like insurance and overhead roller garage doors.
What would he be worth in todays game with that goalscoring record.

Like Wynn Chester I was to young to see him play, now old enough to appreciate how great he was as both a player and a person. To me he was more known to me as my dads weekend viewing as part of Saint and Greavsie

Very sad news.
One of the Greatest Footballers of all time (a true legend), I have fond memories of watching Saint and Greavsie, from the mid 1980's to early 1990's.
Jimmy Greaves, scored twice for Tottenham Hotspur, in the 1963 European Cup Winners Cup Final (against Atlético Madrid), was the first time that a European Trophy, was won by a British club, Jimmy also won the FA Cup, twice, with Tottenham Hotspur.
Was of course part of the 22 man 1966 England World Cup Squad, over half that Squad have now sadly left us.
I hope Jimmy will be up there now, enjoying a good laugh with Ian St John (who we sadly lost, earlier this year).
R.I.P. Jimmy Greaves.

Sad to hear of his passing. Undoubtedly one of the finest centre forwards ever (you've only to see the stats to learn that) , but what I admired most about him was his inextinguishable sense of mischievous fun (inspite of the very low periods that unfairly blighted his life). He will be missed
RIP Sir

Only saw him play in a charity match after he’d retired but so many people have said that he was one of, if not the, greatest strikers of all time and his record certainly lends credence to that. Loved his show with The Saint.
RIP.

Greavsie documentary on BT sport now
Another thing about Jimmy was he used to do tv reviews on tv am. I'd say he was a fan of Minder back in the 80s.
I also remember him jokingly refering to Tony Daley the Aston Villa winger from the Graham Taylor 1990 side as 'there's old Arthur Daley flying down the wing'

England's fourth highest international goalscorer. Tottenham Hotspur's highest ever goalscorer. The highest goalscorer in the history of English top-flight football. Scored more hat-tricks (six) for England than anyone else. Finished as the First Division's top scorer in six seasons.
Sir, I take of my hat to you....ten times. You were one of the greatest ever footballers this country has produced.
RIP

Too young to have seen him play and probably didn't appreciate just how good he was until I saw that BT documentary. The way he glided across those terrible pitches. In my mind I had him tagged as a tap-in merchant but I was clearly underestimating him. I used to love watching Saint & Greavsie and miss that easy appreciation of the game, now lost to a barrage of incomprehensible stats.

The first player to score 100 top flight goals before the age of 21.
Scored 174 goals in 137 First division games. Hasn't been bettered yet.

Jimmy had a 'look' about him in the 60s that showed he was up for scoring goals. In later life he had a second career that equalled this, as a genial broadcaster. The BBC news tribute was soundtracked by the opening riff of The Small Faces 'Tin Soldier', an inspired choice indeed R.I.P. Jimmy Greaves.

Alan Shearer should insist his MOTD caption remove a claim on being record goalscorer for a start.

His career stats were frightening. Overlooked is the fact he went to Italy and played for AC Milan in the early 60s, when defence was the order of the day and scored a very impressive 9 goals in 15 games and he wasn't even playing as the main striker. Watching clips of him scoring he was more than just a poacher too.
He finished playing at 31, which even for back then was very young.
His much documented battle with alcohol is a very sad story, but the good part was he turned things around and made a second career for himself in the media.
RIP Jimmy
