I knew his name as well as face as he'd been in so many programmes I love over the years. Only last week I watched an episode of Angels (from 1975) in which he had a fairly substantial part where he was cast against his normal type as a polite mild mannered man who was secretly suffering from depression I thought to myself I haven't seen him in such a sensitive role before and he was very good Ron Pember always played a fairly ordinary, run of the mill type guy who the viewer could sympathise with except for one role which imo didnt fit in with his persona. He played the Bakers' delivery driver in 'Poor Cow' and basically got his legover a young, lonely, needy woman by serving her with cakes and breads iirc. RB being cast in the role didn't sit right with me for some reason.

I watched 'Lyttons Diary' a couple of years ago and PB had the character off to a tee. Well spoken, well educated and used to the finer things in life - spot on.
RIP.

One of those faces hat cropped up in so many things, he must have worked with hundreds of famous faces. I wonder if it was his choice to stay in the minor roles or if he just never caught a producers/directors eye.
RIP.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the mechanic stripping the car. That line about 'we've got another problem- tell your governor we're into double time' is a belter IMHO It would have been good to know the outcome of the BMW too. Did Arthur get it back after paying Frank for it etc.

Nice scheduling by ITV 4 today; The Sweeney 'Hearts And Minds' followed by Minder 'Dreamhouse'. IMHO two weak episodes together. Means I can get some work done outside, especially as no Big Match to watch at dinnertime. Each to their own 615 but surely you can see some redeeming features in these episodes. I happen to like them but i realise that they're not amongst the most well thought of with lot of forum members. There's some cracking, quintessentially Minder scenes and dialogue in both.

Read his wiki profile, i didn't realise that not only did he present University Challenge, he also set all of the questions.
I wonder if Paxman did the same during his tenure.
RIP Bamber.

Quattro is a handsome woman at this stage in her career ...and that was slouching around in Jeans and a leather jacket! Wonder what she would have looked like 'glammed up' in a nice little tight mini dress, high heels, make up and hair done etc.

Debbie I wish they'd bought her back towards the end of the DW run or even had them two elope to Australia....would have given Tel the happy ending he deserved. Great idea, that would have been good. Out of Terrys two semi regular girlfriends, Penny and Debbie, Debbie was far more suitable imo and I could have seen them settling and having a very good life together. Debbie was a decent, goodhearted person but her being a stripper would always mean that certain folk would look down on her and judge her unfairly so i reckon a 'clean start' in Australia would have suited her as she was getting older and stripping was no longer an option.

Thanks for sorting that jno Why can't I remember ever seeing this snippet before? Why has it been omitted up until now from the ITV repeats, UKGold and ITV4 showings and why was it not on the Clearvision offering? Any suggestions?

She appeared briefly, credited but without a character name, in Danger By My Side (1962) which was shown last year on Talking Pictures TV. I only just recognised her. To be honest it took me a long time to recognise her in 'All About Scorin 'innit' just seven years after her Sweeney appearance.

Its omission on the Clearvision DVD just doesn't make any sense.. I'm sure there was a scene on another early EP that I've not seen on any of the DVD's... looks like I'll have to check out the ITV EPs just in case... Its omission from previous ITV4 airings, at least the ones I've watched, doesn't make sense either. What's changed to include it this time around? There could be others, who knows? Someone with the Australian boxset may be able to shed some light.

This isn't good if true! Cutting a scene on the DVDs? Surely not!!! JB Definitely not on my set. It would be good if this is one of the episodes jno or VAT may have the script of. That could give us an answer.

Sad news. Passed away aged 81 which would have made her 35 in 'Night Out'. I must admit to thinking she was quite a sexy, buxom thing wearing her open dressing gown whilst standing over Jack behind the bar . RIP.

Why would Clearvision have cut it. Unless there were music rights issues. Only thing I could think of. I don't think there's any music playing McC, just three or four short lines between Arthur, Terry and Penny. As I've said, i don't think it's just left out of the Clearvision dvd, i don't remember seeing it at all.

Good spot Barry... I've just logged into the ITV Hub website for the first time in yonks and can't remember seeing that short scene before... Glad I'm not the only one Wynn. I must have watched the episode over twenty times either on 'Gold' in the 90s, ITV repeats in the 80s, on the Clearvision dvd and over the past few years on ITV4 and I'm certain I've never seen the bit i described in any showing.

Sorry to see him go. The feature length version of 'Love Thy Neighbour' still has me laughing out loud and he was the typical 'bloke' in '...Love of Ada'.

So, we're always moaning about ITV4 cutting scenes but watching this one yesterday on that channel i saw a scene that i don't ever recall seeing before, it isn't on my Clearvision set episode, i checked.
The way the episode has always run in my memory goes like this. Terry and Penny are in bed talking about Debbie being a stripper and then Penny tells Terry that how he earns a living is a constant wonder to her etc. etc. In my Clearvision set episode and every other showing I can remember watching, the next shot is of Arthur and Terry in the Jag on the way to the country and Terry telling Arthur that he looks ridiculous in his new clothes BUT on yesterdays showing there was a scene between the bedroom and the Jag where Arthur turns up at Terrys flat to collect him. Terry answers the door, looks at Penny, trying not to laugh and says "Arthur's here." Arthur then enters the flat and we see him in his country Gent outfit to which Penny sarcastically says something like, "You look fantastic!" The sarcasm goes right over Arthurs head as he replies, "I thought you'd like it.", then we see Arthur and Tel in the Jag.
I honestly don't remember seeing this scene before, is it on other dvd releases and has it been shown on the early TV transmissions?

Watching this today, when the group come out of the casino and find Maurice's tyre has been punctured, is this a trick of Sadie to trap Maurice into getting a lift in the mini? And landing him in it with Mo. Or have I just twigged something that everyone else spotted years ago? Never thought of it being down to Sadie tbh but it's certainly possible. I have always assumed that it was one of Parsons' heavies in a continuing attempt to put Maurice off frequenting to their casino.

I found it odd that Arthur is a prude upon hearing Terry and Debbie had been at it "in the car" " and "in open daylight".Later he recoils in horror I don't know if it's Arthur being a prude tbh, i think it's more a case of a hint of jealousy creeping in. When Arthur realises that Terry didn't 'oblige it' in the car, a smug grin appears on Arthurs face and his attitude changes to more relaxed again. Although I can't recall the particular episodes, Arthur has shown this trait towards Terrys conquests with other women too.

One of those faces that turned up in just about everything! Appeared in Minder as Alec Rowan, the corrupt accountant, in The Son Also Rises. Only watched Sweeney episode 'Hit and Run' yesterday with GW appearing. Sad news, RIP.

Last time I was In Ireland I noticed you still have the word minerals on shop and pub signs, didn’t know younger people don’t use the word the only soft drink I had In Ireland was always Nash’s red lemonade was made about 8 miles from my dads village The fish & chip shop that my family used when I was a child advertised soft drinks on its price board as minerals and although I knew what the word referred to, I never understood the reference. What is the connection between Coca Cola, Lemonade, Tango etc. etc. and the word minerals?

I voted Costa(fortune) and Starbucks merely because they're the only brands with outlets near where i live, oh there's a Caffenero in Truro i think.
Book junior has twisted my arm into buying her a Starbucks a couple of times but i refuse to do it anymore as the prices are completely unjustifiable.
There's an independent coffee shop in Truro called '108' that seems to do well, they have a couple of 'runners' that i see delivering coffees to offices, shops and other workplaces which is all very nice but you've got to be talking £2-50 a go minimum and I'm afraid I'm just too tight to be spending that when I can boil water and pour it on to some coffee granules myself.

the now ex Mrs yoyo said she had seen Jethro live years ago She said she spent the entire evening shaking her head at his jokes and he kept on glaring at her! Never saw him live myself but people that I know who have, say that he would pick a member or two of the audience and really give them a hard time. Also from what I've been told, his live shows were very 'blue' to the point of being quite offensive and personal to anyone he happened to pick on in the audience, not my cup of tea tbh.

I'm fairly certain that you see a full side view and then front view of the bus on the move with GW driving so not on a low loader. I was wondering if it has anything to do with the old PSV licence as opposed to todays PCV? As far as I remember, pre '96(?) you could drive coaches and buses on a car licence as long as you were eighteen or over and you weren't carrying fare paying passengers. That would be the answer then. I didn't know that. In recent years then of course it all became standardised throughout Europe, categories, exceptions etc. It was a quirk of the licencing system really. You needed a PSV to drive say a small bus with 20 passengers if they were paying for the privilege but you could drive a double decker with non paying passengers on a car licence. The change to PCV, passenger carrying rather than PSV, public service, made more sense and meant that a separate test was required if you wanted to carry more than 12(?) passengers.

On first appearence Shireen Anwar looks and sounds 20-21 shocking to hear shes at least 10 years older here.Than again Mike Grady"s character is 33 older than Dennis Waterman here!! That surprises me, Indira and Kev looked like a teenaged, lovestruck couple who were just starting in life. Usually for this era actors look older than their age not younger.

Was surprised to see GW actually driving the bus on public roads. He seemed to handle it quite well so full marks to him but i wonder about the legality of it? Was the coach actually on a low loader trailer? Haven't seen it recently baz so can't really recall. If he was really driving then maybe they closed the roads for filming, or had an instructor out of shot. Health and safety weren't two words that existed together back then. So fair dues if he actually did it. I'm fairly certain that you see a full side view and then front view of the bus on the move with GW driving so not on a low loader. Arthur still veers into the posh George Cole accent His posh accent makes the line, 'He's awfully p$ssed off!", in this one a classic. It wouldn't have sounded nearly as good in Arthurs later, less polished tones.
