Arthur still veers into the posh George Cole accent His posh accent makes the line, 'He's awfully p$ssed off!", in this one a classic. It wouldn't have sounded nearly as good in Arthurs later, less polished tones.

Some good notes and points Barry and a good episode review. Great to hear that you're getting a daily/Daley fix of Minder

Good to see the evil Rose Mellors back and she's a wrong 'un through and through. Quite why she wants to stitch up Terry but bed him at the same time is a bit of a mystery, unless I'm missing something. I suppose that given she offered Terry a share of the potential spoils she was actually stitching up Arthur. I've always assumed that Rose bedded Terry to sweeten him up and soften any bad feeling he may have towards her once he'd discovered that she'd stitched him up. I don't think she was the sort of woman who'd think twice about using her body to help her cause.

I find this first episode average and must admit had I watched it in '79 I'm not sure it would have prompted me to watch the next episode. There is some clever dialogue, and having the DVD set is nice since we're hearing the original dialogue and not the cleaned-up version. This one does have a different feel to the rest, maybe because it's more about Terry than Arthur. Also, Terry being stuck in the laundrette for a lot of the time rather than out and about on the manor wasn't as good.

Caught this on ITV4 today and during the scene of self inflicted breaking into Terrys flat so he can phone Arthur about Jones sniffing around, you can count 14 empty lager cans in the kitchen and sitting room so self inflicted could certainly put some away.
Btw, the Carlsberg cans are obvious enough but can anyone identify the blue and white ones?

Good review Barry and an interesting note about GC being mugged, I hadn't heard of this before.
George Layton made one of his Sweeney appearances with a black eye which he apparently got in a road rage incident whilst on his way to filming.

Quite an insight jno and good, interesting stuff.
Going slightly off topic, on YouTube there's an early, live performance of 'A Girl Called Johnny' by The Waterboys which has a blistering sax solo and accounted for probably the whole second half of the track - awesome stuff.

Colin Hay has a killer range as a singer. Lazy bass players who never bother their aris to sing one note wouldn't appreciate this but really can hit the high notes. It's the same with the second half of 'Overkill' after the guitar solo, he's right back in and right up there. The vocals on "It's A Mistake" are phenomenal too. As a singer he has a very unique style and a voice that is instantly recognisable which I wholeheartedly applaud. I agree and was also going to mention 'It's A Mistake' as a great example of CHs' vocals. I'm not a guitarist myself so wouldn't have a clue as to the intricacies of playing but I remember reading a review about Men at Work and CHs' later solo career which commented that Hays style of play could easily lead the listener into believing they were hearing two guitarists playing together rather than just the one musician. I've got that sentiment whilst listening to some of his stuff, I think he's very talented.

I chose 'Overkill' and 'Who Can It Be Now' but the other tracks are also very good. 'Overkill' is one of my all time favourites by any band and when we were at school, me and my mates took ages to work out exactly what the lyrics were . Colin Hay is a very good front man and can entertain an audience with funny dialogue and anecdotes. He's continued to produce some good music as a solo artist.

Am I the only one who thinks that when Arthur turns the radio on in the Stingray, the music that plays sounds similar to the music played on 'Bullseye' when the contestants play the knockout rounds. Bullseye would have just about started when the episode was shown so would it be an in joke? Now you mention it, i see the similarity yes - good spot

Recently talking pictures showed a documentary about Max Wall thinking it was going to funny I watched it, it was actually fairly sad how Max didnโt really see his children and it looked like he spent the last years of his life living in a bed sit in Lee. In Minder he as others have said was excellent a really enjoyable episode, I suppose the level of luxury then and now in hotels is miles apart I watched this too ons. As you say, it wasn't all about laughs but then, I've watched a few of these type of interviews/documentaries based on comedy actors/presenters and behind the faรงade of the cheeky, chirpy, happy go lucky personality front, there's very often an unhappy, unfulfilled and discontent human being who's longing for some normality in their life.

ยฃ250K doesn't sound much money today. Certainly not worth doing fourteen years bird for. If Ernie was out in 1982 then the robbery must have taken place in 1968. Using my inflation calculator ยฃ250K in 1968 was the equivalent of ยฃ1.2 million in 1982 and is the equivalent of ยฃ4.45 million in 2021. ...in which case, Ernie paid ( in todays value) something like ยฃ400,000 for plastic surgery which, " made me look more like me than I did before!".

The Winchester, which seems very surreal without Dave in it's scenes here. Talking of which, after watching this one many, many times, it only occurred to me on todays viewing that whoever the barman was when Spencer walks in for the first time, he certainly wasn't 'one of our own.' Spencer heads straight for the bar and obviously asks the barman if he knows Arthur or if he's in the building and the barman points Arthur out immediately! Very poor show for an employee of an establishment like the Winch which caters for a certain type of clientele.

I have got to the point now where only have Minder on in the background on ITV4 now I know what you mean. Some of the material that's been cut leaves me baffled too as it's not offensive in any way, it must be purely to make the episode fit an allotted timeslot. I'd strongly recommend anyone that's only seen the ITV4 edited versions of Minder and Sweeney to buy the uncut dvd sets.

This is a great episode but I donโt know why ITV4 miss this episode out every time on the Minder reruns. I am guessing itโs to do with gay issues. It would be great to see this episode back on the ITV4 reruns. It's been shown on ITV4 in the past albeit an edited version. Episodes aren't always shown in series order so it ay turn up quite randomly at some point.

And then itโs onto the big match revisited. Those pitches were muddy ๐ Like ploughed fields weren't they. It would have been good to see the players of the 70s performing on todays quality of pitch.

cool but also sad as that tradition in Pubs around London and across the country has vanished now as well as thousands of pubs closing down. All you get now is either a band on a fri-sat night or a dj Agreed azza. Pubs have lost their attraction but through no fault of their own imo. Having to wear masks, follow one way systems, not being allowed to mingle, rely on table service etc. etc. through the pandemic drained the very essence of the pub experience and I wonder if things will ever revert to what we once knew and enjoyed.

Remember him now Definitely a slippery looking Git! I'm sure this question hs been asked many times before but do we know how many of these guys went onto have an acting career in adulthood? Obviously Todd Carty, Sue Tully and the guy 'Robbie?' who appeared in London's Burning but were there many others? Paula Ann Bland (Claire Scott), continued acting after she left Grange Hill, her last acting credit (listed on IMDb), was in 1994. Lee MacDonald (Samuel "Zammo" McGuire), was acting before Grange Hill, and has continued to act since. There are bound to be some other Actors and Actresses, who continued acting after they left Grange Hill. I'm sure there was a programme made some years ago in which some of the Grange Hill cast were tracked down. I'm sure that Lee MacDonald was running a locksmith/key cutting shop in East London somewhere and Eric Mustafa was running a record stall. There were also a couple of the cast who were tracked down but didn't want to take part as they no longer wanted to be associated with GH.

Sorry to read this, I liked Tony Selby in whatever he turned up in. He had the natural look of a 'heavy' or 'minder' type.
'Queens Pawn' is one of the better Sweeney episodes imo and I always enjoy watching him in 'Villain' alongside Richard Burton and many other well known faces.
R.I.P Tony.

To be honest I'd forgotten a lot of the characters so it's good of see a list of them again.
I voted for 'Gonch' - I seem to remember he always had a money making scheme on the go so a little bit of Arthur in him maybe.
Danny Kendall - one i'd forgotten all about but I liked the fact that he really couldn't give a sh$t about school or the teachers and wasn't afraid to show it.
Calley Donnington - Looked awesome in a school uniform.

Terry taking Dee to see the piano player in the pub was a fun scene. That's what I always imagine a backstreet, locals only, London pub to be like. Good atmosphere, people know each other and a good old singsong going on

And what a bod Rikki Howard had! Lucky old Jacqout or whatever his name is? JB Born 1953 according to imdb which would mean she was in her late 20s in this episode? She's a very fine looking woman in 'Bounty Hunter' but to be honest I would have put her in the early forties bracket.

Incidentally, do we know the origin of the phrase "case"? Off the top of my head, Terry and Arthur use this to describe Alex and Jim living together, but Terry also uses it when being asked to horse sit several hundred weight of unprocessed dog meat in National Pelmet Watched an episode of 'Public Eye' last night, 'Hard Times' (1975). There's a scene of Marker and a client discussing the whereabouts a woman and Marker asks, "Is she on the game?", to which his client replies, "She'll go case for fifty." At first I assumed he meant that she'd have sex/go case for fifty quid but then reading WC's post above regarding Terry going case with a horse, I can't imagine it'd mean that! So I reckon it's being used in the context of sharing a bed - however we're still no closer to finding the origins of the term.

Sad news indeed, she always appeared to be a very nice, prim and proper lady. As mentioned, she was very good as the Garnetts daughter and as Aunt Sally but I remember her mostly from 'Give Us A Clue', Una and Lionel as team Captains used to get right into it and give it their all . RIP.

Was Jerome Flynn (Soldier Soldier/Robson & Jerome) the look a like in the studio knocking on the window ...Demented Dave I think... He's very young and it's uncredited and not mentioned on IMDB or Google. Now you mention it, I can see the similarity. What date is Flynns first mention on imdb si? Was he working as an actor at this time?

That's sad news and a young age to go.
The sexiest woman to appear in Minder imo and although her character was a dumb blonde bimbo type, in real life she obviously had a lot more to offer as Mo Hayder.
RIP.
