R.I.P. Eric Bristow. From a charismatic breed of sportsmen that you don't seem to get anymore. That's true. TBH, though, there weren't that many back in his day: Jocky Wilson and Bobby George perhaps fell into that mould....

R.l.P. Eric. What a horrible week for losing ex sportsmenI keep reading people are living longer but loads died young lately, Cyril Regis was another quite young one. Lots of sportsmen hung up their kits for good lately whereas the ancient rockstars like Ozzy and the Stones just keep on going. I deduce from this that being a fit sportsman might mean you die younger than a booze and drug addled rocker who never done any exercise. I might cancel my gym membership and pop down the local crack house instead. Better to be safe than sorry! Your not too far from truth. Firmly believe that when anyone pushes their bodies to the limit... and stop their bodies go from extreme to another. Whereas someone like Ronnie Wood has been on benders since he was about 9 - the alcohol has marinated his organs.

Absolutely devastated by this sad news. As a lifelong Chelsea fan this is the day I was dreading. I flagged up he was rushed to hospital on the football thread; his style of play, being the Chelsea assistant manager for Hiddink and Ancelotti, captained England on 10 occasions... Ray was ahead of his time. Pep would love to have Ray Wilkins in his pomp playing in his current team.
To add to his footballing talent he was a genuinely nice guy.
R.I.P. Ray.

Fun band. None of their music was ever sophisticated. Perhaps that's what made them different. In the early 80s music became too serious IMHO, with the birth of New Romantics.

Hate cleaning our windows. The reason is simple: We live right on the edge of a big common. When the wind picks up there's no buffer and every piece of c##p gets blown in our direction.

'What a beautiful day for running up to the front door of the Kremlin and shouting: "Is Lenin?"' 'What a beautiful day for sticking a broom stick up Lewis Hamilton's backside and saying: "How's that for pole position"'

You've missed one, Arch. Spike Milligan wrote some books with his take on traditional children's stories. I think they were turned into records/audio stuff.
He told the story about the 'Three Little Pigs'. Can't recall exactly how the story went - it was donkeys years ago. But after the wolf couldn't blow the house made of bricks down, Milligan concluded, only as he could: "The moral of the story is: Don't buy a crummy house". That still makes me chuckle.

Looks like they are waiting to use a toilet. "Steef, 'ave you got 20p? 'Aven't had a hit for a few months and the old coffers are a bit thin"....I thought they were in the doctor's waiting room, suffering from the blues.... Or waiting for a train... with a bladder problem.

The idiom Coals to Newcastle springs to mind. Was that an album track by The Jam? Yup - from the album 'Hindsight'.

There's a strong case for (almost) all of them. With everything considered I've plumped for 'When Your Young', for two important reasons: 1) It was the first single I ever purchased of The Jam in 79. And 2) because of the flipside: Smithers Jones. IMHO the best song Foxton has ever written. I think we've all come across or known a Smithers Jones. Then again, I could vote for Start/Liza Radley. Another wonderful flipside. No, I'll stick with my original choice. Great song that has a similar theme to 2 of my favourite Kinks songs 'A Well Respected Man' and 'Mr Pleasant'. Yeah, probably one of their best songs period. In all truth it would easier to vote for the one I don't particularly like.

Rick Buckler is Johnnny Walker’s guest on Sounds Of The Seventies On Radio 2 (available on the Iplayer for four weeks after). Yes, thanks for the heads up I don't think I've heard Rick speak too much in person, and he comes across as a genuine guy.The interview wasn't too deep, and he didn't go into any bitterness about the end of The Jam. Sorry to lower the tone, but Rick and mate Russell appeared on a car TV programme called Auto Trader. Hosted by Mike Brewer, they try and find people (usually ordinary folk) a car of their choice. Being a petrolhead does have its benefits. From 2 mins 26

Not really a stand-up fan. If I had to choose...
Bob Monkhouse - clever and diverse Lenny Henry - so much more than a comedian Billy Connolly - Outrageous Tommy Cooper. Simple but funny jokes Frank Skinner - Quick wit.

Dad's Army is my favourite out of the bunch. Also voted for 'Please, Sir'. Not because it's any good, but anything was better than the series. And Steptoe Rides Again is another borderline film.
To be honest, no successful TV comedy has ever translated well into a full feature. They were all dross.

Summer Holiday was okay... when it starred Rik Mayall, Ade Edmondson, Nigel Planer etc etc

"See ya, muscles."
Watched this episode last night (Thursday) and thought it quite amusing. Have to say, the parts that were weak was the proposed arranged marriages - and the daughter in love with dopey Kev. I felt that could have been done better.
The less than truthful shop owner is familiar, and should've been used to a greater extent.
Overall, take away the analysis and it was an enjoyable watch.
7/10

Have to say that Lidl, based on recent experience, is crummy and okay in equal measure. Some produce is fine, especially chickens. The rest goes from mediocre to s###e.
Never been to Aldi. Personally prefer BMW. Oops, that should be Audi. Oh well, it's only one letter out.

Can I vote for both? Generally I'm a giver but if it's in the right spirit *hic!* (pun intended), then I'll happily take. By that, if someone says let's buy him a nice prezzie, as opposed to "if we're buying her a gift then we'll have to include him"No you can't vote for both. This week is either or. If you cannot decide, take the Give/Take psychometric test (see above) for a true reflection of your soul. Ace and I (at least) have done it and been big enough to share our results on here. That is the only help I can give you. Your time starts, NOW!Don't have a watch.

Sunshine on Leith as you have never heard it before and let me assure you despite the fairly dodgy sound quality, I heard them sing this at Hampden back in April and it really does makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Errr...erm... no, doesn't 'do it' for me. It is hindered, though, by all the distortion on the recording.

My daughter thought they were a one-hit wonder with '500 miles'. Strange how different people perceive a certain band or group. The youth of today! Some people say "I blame the parents" Fair point. What's more regnant is the fact '500 miles' is only Proclaimers record I have and the radio generally don't play the others.

A friend of mine once said I looked like one of the Proclaimers. I retorted, "how can I look like one of them when they are identical twins". He would have trouble winding up a cuckoo clock.

I can't vote as I've never seen or heard of any of these people. Scary dolls ! I wouldn't be able to sleep if one of these silent partners was in the same room as me or even in a cupboard nearby. Phew! So I'm not alone. Give me creepy crawlies, snakes, spiders... no issues. But dummies... eek, can't handle that. Honestly get sweaty palms and come out in a cold flush...and nightmares.
