Sad news. Played north of the border with Rangers and Hibs, the latter when he was 40.
This is a guy who took a lot of stick for his playing style back in the day, but was ahead of his time in the way he played, he would have been superb in this era of football.
Went to Italy and lasted 4 years, not many English players can claim that and kept on playing until he was in his 40s and dropped down the divisions to do so, takes a real football man to do that after the career he had and I imagine it was because he loved playing the game.
RIP Ray

I believe he got into a bit of bother with the law in the last few years. Not to take anything away from him, he was a footballing hero of mine back in the day and he's English and I'm Welsh, so fair play to the guy - that is some doing. RIP Ray.

Absolutely devastated by this sad news. As a lifelong Chelsea fan this is the day I was dreading. I flagged up he was rushed to hospital on the football thread; his style of play, being the Chelsea assistant manager for Hiddink and Ancelotti, captained England on 10 occasions... Ray was ahead of his time. Pep would love to have Ray Wilkins in his pomp playing in his current team.
To add to his footballing talent he was a genuinely nice guy.
R.I.P. Ray.

R.I.P. Ray. He had integrity and decency in abundance. I met Ray when he was assistant to Gianluca Vialli at Watford when I worked at Coventrys Highfield Road on match day. Absolute gentlemen the pair of them, and it was genuine. A very sad day indeed, regardless of which team you support.

Sorry to hear this. I recall him from the days of 'Shoot!' magazine in the late 70s.
He had a long playing career into middle age. I recall that during the earlier 90s when he was still playing, his healthy diet was always mentioned. He seemed to exemplify the good of football in various ways.
I was sorry to hear that in more recent times he had health difficulties, both physically and mentally, whilst still very involved in the current game.
R.I.P. Ray Wilkins.

I can't find it offhand, but I recall someone (me, I think) suggesting Ray would be a great Bond villain with his voice and vocal delivery.
Excellent tributes on TalkSPORT radio today, many rival fans calling in with lovely anecdotes. Bottom line was he was a genuine and humble person who looked for the good in people.
Here's Ray in a routine day at the office. Never mind he has the wrong shirt on. RIP

Awful news. I got used to listening to RW presenting the Talksport breakfast show alongside Alan Brazil a couple of times a week. Always came across as a total Gentleman and I'm sure he'll be sorely missed by all.
RIP Butch.

Having been a Chelsea supporter since 1970, I've met a few players... sadly I never met Ray. Out of one player you would like to speak to, Ray would be high on your list. He always came across as someone you could have a good chinwag when it came to all things football.
