What a life this guy had. I personally liked him and his comedy style, old school he most certainly was, but didn't make him any less funny.
Stayed in the same house all his life.
One of a kind.
RIP Ken.

Yes, Ken was definitely old school and a real comedy legend. And 'Tears' is the 39th biggest selling UK single of all time.

Very, very sad news. He was an absolute legend - he was a very distant relative of mine and my parents often used to go and see him live. They stopped using public transport to get to the venue as by the time he finished performing all the buses and trains had long since stopped. One time he said he was getting towards the end of the show at 22:30 - and he eventually walked off stage at 1am! He certainly gave value for money.
RIP.

Being American I had heard of him and I think only ever saw him in Doctor Who. I was very impressed to read about how long some of his performances were and that he was still performing well in to his later years.

Yes he was a great comedian. He preferred live shows and didn't do too much TV comparatively. Going to see him live was one thing I should have done, but never did . MIAS mentioned his song 'Tears' - in amongst no. 1s by The Beatles, The Stones, The Byrds, Sonny & Cher and The Walker Brothers, Ken managed five weeks at the top of the charts, the longest run by any single in 1965. Quite remarkable and shows how popular the supposedly staid easy-listening music was in that period. R.I.P. Ken Dodd. There are few of that generation left now.

Not my type of comic, but he endeared himself to many. A good man who did a lot for charity. His tax returns were as funny as his jokes, and as a kid, I loved The Diddy Men. Great teeth and hair as well. Godspeed Ken.

He’d open his show by saying, “The definition of an optimist? Those people who have booked cabs for midnight”.

Very sad news to lose (arguably) our last great comic from the "Golden" era. A master of delivery and no one could ever complain about not getting value for money at his live shows !
RIP Sir

I used to love the Diddy Men. I am told that his live shows were exceptional and he would go on stage at something like 8 o'clock in the evening and be on until midnight or later!
End of an era.

i saw a t.v programme about his shows a couple of years ago, and fancied going to see it, he was playing in Wimbledon and eastbourne, but i then realised I would probably miss the last train home if he was going onto 1am!
I got into the car this morning and turned on the radio, and just froze when i heard the news!
R.I.P Sir Ken

Very sad news of his passing. But what a life he had. I went to see his show in Eastbourne 5 years ago, as wanted to get the full experience, I had heard his shows might go on long and joked with my mate I brought with me about (he did not believe me), I booked front row thinking if it is super long, I'd be able to stretch my legs and not get cramped in. It was true, show went on 5 hours, we got out at 1am! I drove as figured we might get stuck. Sods law though, there was a raised orchestra pit in front of us with solid wooden wall, so had even less leg space than a normal seat, haha. Still the show was amazing, the riots were actually going on in London that very night and he was cracking joke after joke and was amazed that he still was getting even bang up to date the minute current affairs stuff in. I wrote him a letter afterwards saying how I'd enjoyed the show and me and my mate had a been a bit worried about being the youngest in the audience, he wrote back with a lovely letter talking about the show that night, the audience all clear as a bell, he was 85 at the time. He even sent a signed photo and another for my friend, he said he'd not dedicated it as didn't know his name. A true true legend and professional. One that will be missed. RIP Sir Ken Dodd

Also, anyone who kept The Beatles off the top of the charts is ok in my book. Been watching his act on TV, the jokes were awful Christmas cracker types, but he never swore or was course JUST to get a laugh. That's admirable.

I've been reading up on Mister Dodd and I am now even more impressed with his achievements and career longevity. It appears the U.K. has lost a great entertainer.

An innocent time has passed with Ken Dodd. He played his last show at the end of December. He could never be accused of shortchanging his audience, and touring at the age of 90 is admirable.
Always presumed that his refrences to Knotty Ash was part of his act. Like the Diddy Men. Reading about his death at home there, I learned it is a suburb of Liverpool. That qave me a laugh for a moment, and that was what he was all about.

RIP Doddy

It was because he used to refer to Knotty Ash as having "jam butty mines" and "black pudding plantations" I think these were made up for his 'Ken Dodd & The Diddymen' TV series (1969-72)?

Took this last August during his curtain call at about 0130 at Venue Cymru, Llandudno. I did feel a bit sorry for the support act who followed his first approximately 2 hour set as so many of the audience being of a certain age exited the auditorium to use the facilities. Two winners from the National Eisteddfod which was being held on Anglesey that weekend also performed which I thought was a nice touch. I am glad I went. There are a number of performers I wish I had seen and left it too late. Material wise I preferred Barry Cryer (82) who I also saw last year but it was an entertaining and funny show with good songs and exactly what his audience wanted.
