Link to episode on minder.org: www.minder.org/episodeguide/S04E10_GetDaley.htm The old chap at the hospital (Dunning) is a great addition to this one as he is nothing but additional 'agg' for a bedridden Arthur, telling Arthur the details of how he got his 'Chalfonts' (haemorrhoids) done. Very funny to watch. There is also of course the letter: Dear Terrence. No. Terry. Dear Terry, I am writing this in case something happens to me. You would laugh if you could see me now, but what with having this operation, I seem to have gone a bit morbid. This is just to say that you have been like a son to me, even though at times I might have been a bit inconsiderate. But you know what the pressures on the entrepreneur are, in this day and age. I hope you have enjoyed our long association, as much as I have, despite the vicississitu... vicississi... ups and downs. Good luck. Your pal, Arthur Three interesting pics about this one (see below) - on the left, a Ceefax on screen seen in the episode showing the date: Sat 22 Oct 1983. The picture in the middle is an auction I lost out on that has as a enlarged grab of the lot I didn't win. This was Roy Pointer's paperwork. I know it is blurry but it is the best picture I could get ... I am 99.9% certain this is a call sheet for Get Daley, which shows a very blurry Get Daley and Ian Toynton in the red circle and Tuesday, November 1st in the green circle. The word 'Hospital' is also seen just below the red circle. Therefore, based on these two dates, I would have to put the filming of this episode between Sat 22 Oct 1983 and Fri 04 Nov 1983.
A nice newspaper prop 'The Handicap Book' which also features in A Well Fashioned Fit Up can also be seen here on the right.

This episode is one of my favourites (hence my username) in fact I think it’s one of the best ever episodes. This is one of the first I saw with Terry in as my Nan & Grandad bought me a video around Christmas 1991/1992 (I’d asked for a Minder video) a WH Smith one that contained Get Daley, A Well Fashioned Fit Up & A Number Of Old Wives Tales (I love those two episodes as well).
If I was asked to recommend an episode to someone that had never seen Minder then I would suggest Get Daley it has everything that a good Minder episode should have Chisholm & Jones on Arthurs tail, punch ups, a deal that goes wrong, nasty villains, Terry having to rescue Arthur, seedy locations, an eccentric character (Dunning), scenes with a Daimler and Capri and just the right balance between drama and comedy.
For Chisholm fans the scene where he takes Dermot outside to the yard in the pub must be one of Chisholms best scenes you get to see how nasty and feared he is by small time crooks. The punch up in Dermot's garage is also one of the best, it’s not clear who the two guys who turn up are but I guess they are friends of Dermots.
Albert Wendell (Wendy) is an especially nasty character I like how he is portrayed sitting in his house with everyone running around for him Harry, Sammy & Keithy doing his dirty work and his wife and I guess young daughter bringing him food while he just sits there on the phones in front of the TV’s.
I love the scene in Terry’s flat with Vic Harrison, it’s one of those cases in Minder that makes it feel so real he’s played by Brian Peck an actor I’m not aware of but he did a great job of playing his part in this and when at the rugby field we see him walking away into the mist it’s a perfect exit for the character you can almost feel his pain at losing his brother.
One of the nice things we see is just how much Arthur values Terry, in the note he writes in case he doesn’t make it and also in the scene when he’s feeling nervous about the op and says “you’re a good boy Terry”.
With regard to the recording dates I noticed at the rugby field some of the trees are well into their autumn colours so I thought it must be around October time they did the filming.
Not a blooper but when Arthur arrives at the hospital the nurse suggests Terry will take the rest of Arthurs clothes home for him (suggesting at least one of the two suit cases) however when Terry and Dave smuggle Arthur out of the hospital Terry carries the two cases out then.
I’ve seen this episode lots of times however after watching it today I’ve picked up on something I’ve previously missed, they keep mentioning a character called Green who is buying the dummies from Arthur, he is mentioned many times throughout the episode but we don’t see him, could it be that they intended casting someone to play him or his scene was deleted or the script slightly changed, I know Minder has unseen characters like ‘Sexy South from Hammersmith’ is mentioned in this episode buts that just once but Green keeps being mentioned (by Arthur, Terry, Dave and Sandra) as if he is due to come into it or something that he does will effect the story but its said he picks the dummies up and pays Terry no problem. Next time you watch it look out for the mentions of Green and comment here would love to know what you think.
This episode is perfect from start to finish.
5/5

Excellent notes on an excellent episode AW. I've always thought the punch up in Dermots garage is one of the best in the series. Terry shows himself to be physically hard as well as a good fighter when he takes on and beats the three of them. Wendys flat is a wonderful location too, a wealthy, black market Boookies pad could easily have been a big, luxurious detatched house in the suburbs but that just wouldn't have worked or suited the episode in my opinion. 5/5 from me too.

Just been watching this episode on ITV4 whilst having my evening nosebag and, given recent events, despite the sight of a melancholic Arthur in the hospital brought a lump to my throat, I'd forgotten what a fantastic episode this was...
Out of idle curiosity, given the number of scrips which have come to light, did we ever get to the bottom of what Arthur's pre-dubbed explanation of "PHATI"?

Personal Health And Treatment Indemnity wasn't it?

Yep, that's what the dubbed voice says Barry, but watch Arthur's lips...

Yep, that's what the dubbed voice says Barry, but watch Arthur's lips... Indeed, turn the sound down and watch him say "Personal Health Assurance Trans-International" (stand on me, it's in the script)

No idea, maybe it really existed?! It is not a pink page and there are many in this script I have, so likely a last minute change this one.

I watched this on ITV4 the other day and thought it was a great episode. I thought I had seen it before but soon realised that I hadn't - I must have recognised the locationn with the dummuies which the episode guide on this site reminds me is used in the Professionals episode 'Spy Probe' (a particularly daft episode in so many ways).
But I thought this was excellent, it has everything with fine performances from all sorts of people. As is mentioned above there is a lot of threat from Chisholm towards Dermot but then also from Terry too. So it is a surprise to see the unnamed geezers come to his aid in his garage. Like Albert's post above I wondered who they were. It is interesting that someone so universally hated has such heavy mates who can turn up when needed.
One of the annoying things about ITV4 in particular is the heavy handed editing that is employed. This must have been edited like all the others but I didn't spot any obvious places where stuff had been removed. Not having seen it before I wouldn't know where cuts were made.

Cuts - not a popular word on this forum for any show not just Minder.

Watched this last night and was going to write a brief summary, but Albert Wendell captures it so well above I will leave it at that. Thankyou, would still like to hear your comments and thoughts on the episode. LIke yourself I became very familiar with this episode years ago when I bought it on video and played it to death. For me it is full of good characters, along with superb actors playing them, which is nothing new for Minder, but coupled with an excellent script which just keeps it nicely between gritty drama and comedy and you have a classic episode. For me, Minder is at its best when it gets the balance right between comedy and drama. Albert Wendell, like you say is not a nice man, but you cannot put your finger on why. I am sure back in his younger days he might have been a right evil b**tard, and is still living off his reputation in his reclusive state. Just a very, very good episode and made all the better with some of the dialogue in the hospital between Arthur and the character Dunning. A little sidenote, I got this Minder video on the back of an Our Price promotion where you bought a video and got a stamp on a card and with 6 stamps you got a free one, the Minder one was the free one.

A great episode with a good storyline & plenty of comedy scenes with Arthur in hospital When he is changing behind the screen & giving Terry his orders , then emerges in that red dressing gown , is hilarious - also his conversation with Chisholm while half sedated is very amusing Chisholm goes all Jack Regan in his first encounter with Dermot Wendel appears to have similar tastes in interior décor to Del Boy We have a good punch up between Terry & the two mystery goons at Dermot s garage A brilliant ending with Dave & Terry pushing Arthur out of hospital in the wheel chair , I half expected Barbara Windsor or Kenneth Williams to appear at any moment ! Look out for a blue Capri S parked in the hospital car park behind Arthur s Daimler & that red Granada Ghia was far too good for that mob - it would have been an ideal car for Cowley , had The Professionals continued a bit longer !!

Great observations as usual gra.
The punch-up in Dermots garage is one of the best in the whole of Minder imo. Terry really shows what he's made of!

A return to form following the disappointing 'Windows'. Good guest cast here, Kevin Lloyd, Gorden Kaye, Maureen O'Farrell (Widows) and a great performance from Harold Goodwin as Arthur's morbid fellow patient., Chisholm does get really nasty with his snout here. Terry's punch up is a classic and Arthur's letter to Terry was quite touching and his reaction about him making his life a misery if he read it was great too.

Chisholm does get really nasty with his snout here. Yes he does. Chisholm must have held something pretty heavy on Dermot to be able to talk to him the way he did. I reckon Dermot must have been into something pretty deep that Chisholm knew about. "We'll poodle over to your drum and see what you're smoking these days!"

Fifty minutes of pure enjoyment and entertainment. An all around great episode. I agree, some classic lines and scenes in this plus what is for me, one of the best fights ever, Terry taking on Dermot and his mates in the garage. Another thing I like about this episode is that somehow it feels like I'm watching a S1 or S2 episode. Certain aspects make it feel like early Minder.

I thought this episode was great... everything from the title to where it was set and what it was about. "Get Daley" and he's in a hospital. The hospital itself, I was a patient there a few times, Central Middlesex, before it was knocked down and re-developed. The scene with the nurses, who check to see if patients are safe and kicks the other visitors who are patiences, I don't know if this is with this hospital or with all the hospital. ... but apparently this does happen and maybe it still does at the location. I was at A&E at that hospital (not building since it was knocked down). One of the nurses who were gathering data on patients are A&E was taken advantaged off sometimes, as some of the patients had other visitors when them who weren't patients and maybe got i the way. One time, a female patient bought her boyfriend along but the boyfriend got shouted down and refused into the office by a other nurse. "PATIENTS ONLY!!!" she shouted at him and bounced him. That nurse wasn't as elegant (and attractive) as the one seen in the episode. She was rather perky, smokes, not the kind of person you would want to look at. Not the kind of person you want bouncing you in front of all the other patients. I wonder if that was inspired by the area itself or it's very very common. I've been to other hospital in other around and I've seen visitors refused entry but not like that scene. Only at the same exact location where this episode was filmed. Maybe adds to the authentically to the episode because it feels like it. The field near the Woodworm Scrubs felt real also, because the field there looks like alot of fights take place at the time.
