Sad to hear that Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister of Motorhead has died of cancer in an LA hospital aged 70.
A mighty tree has fallen.

Saw Motörhead live in 1991 - deaf as a post for 2 days after. Great gig supported by 'Annihilator'.
Lemmy - Killed By Death.
RIP.

A man who walked it like he talked it. No Sleep Til Hammersmith is a stone cold classic.

Not my cup of tea music wise, but had nothing but admiration for Lemmy.

Never a band I thought were more than bang average in the NWOBHM age, but Lemmy WAS iconic. A VERY witty and funny man. RIP big man

One of heavy metal's leading forefathers who began cutting his teeth on bands like Rocking Vicars and of course Hawkwind with whom he had scored a major hit in the form of Silver Machine which reached no. 2 or 3 in 1972. He added a raw, groovy edge to their space rock music before getting kicked out in 1975 (he claimed he slept with all their wives!) when he formed Motorhead and the rest as they say is history. He once said his blood would kill anyone else because it was filled so much with illegal substances. It was in the late '90s and early '00s when I really got into the 'head. The Lemmy/Clarke/Taylor line-up was my favourite but they weren't bad with Wurzel and co. either. Not so long ago I listened to their 1987 album Rock & Roll in the car. I also liked Lemmy's appearance in the 1990 movie Hardware. To this day, I think Motorhead's best album was Ace Of Spades - not a duff track on it at all. Another Perfect Day from '83 was underrated IMHO.
A worthy tribute to Lemmy here.
I watched this the first time round back in '99 with my brother and taped it too.

To this day, I think Motorhead's best album was Ace Of Spades - not a duff track on it at all. Another Perfect Day from '83 was underrated IMHO. My favourite is Bomber, the sound of a very angry band spitting bile over anything that moves. Plus it's got Fast Eddie singing. Oddly enough have been listening to Another Perfect Day quite a lot recently. Bought it back in the early 90s and always thought it was an under valued record, but didn't appreciate quite how good it was. Brian Robertson's guitar sounds like it's coming from another planet. Of course he was never going to last but it was worth getting him aboard for that record alone. I love the title track.

Lived as true rocker. Died a man. And sang like a frog with laryngitis.
RIP Lemmo.

They were always too heavy and too metal for my liking....but always sad to hear someone go to the doctor, having cancer diagnosed and two days later hearing of him dying....
To be honest, the song Ace of Spades is their only song that is present in my mind.

Lots of anecdotes as you'd expect, but I loved his line; 'If Eddie Cochran were alive today, he'd be in a Heavy Metal band'

I used to know a bloke who told me he used to roadie for Motorhead, and one night they were so loud that they literally blew the doors off. Can't quite believe it but it is a great story the way he used to tell it.
My missus met him when she used to live in London. She assures me that he answered the door and said "no,try next door",but as far as I'm concerned that makes them best mates.Gotta fudge the CV a bit.

I'll echo some of the previous posts by saying Heavy Metal isn't generally my cup of tea with the exception of half a dozen tracks or so but Lemmy always made me smile. He lived life as an iconic rock legend should but didn't try to revel in any sort of publicity because of it. It just came naturally to him and I think he enjoyed every bit of it.
RIP

Can't stand heavy metal. No fan of Motorhead or of Hawkwind. But Lemmy lived the life he wanted, hence my first response. Most of us can't boast the same. Respect to the man, warts and all.

I'm not sure there's any point labelling Motorhead's music as punk/metal/speed/thrash or whatever. Lemmy himself was firmly of the view they were a rock n roll band, and that any further labels were superfluous.

I will always treasure that memory of Moterhead on TOTP doing 'Ace of Spades'.
The mighty Headgirl will be coming up in Feb/March 1981 TOTP. The first appearance we will miss (DLT) but we will catch the repeat in March. 'Please Don't Touch' is a truly great cover.

I watched a program where he was riding around his back garden in a tank.
He was saying that he never got one for Christmas as a kid,so he bought himself a real one.It was a genuine WW2 Tiger.
Priceless.

Reading an awful lot how much of a gentleman he was. Wouldn't tolerate swearing in front of a lady. By all accounts, a really nice and polite bloke. Just ordered his White Line Fever biography before Amazon push the price up like they normally do when someone checks out.

He also kept a lot of WW2 memoribilia, although unfortunately, most of it was associated with the Germans. That's one of the things that made him a controversial figure to some. He also featured in the movie The Decline Of Western Civilization : Part 2.

He's on record saying he collects German and not Nazi WWII items. He also says he collects them because it's the best looking, and if the Israeli army items were better, he'd collect those instead

Well, after reading all the obituaries on-line and in the newspapers, what I couldn't believe was the obvious statement from Bono. Whenever someone checks out in the music scene, Bono always chips in with a dubious anecdote for us to embrace/savour/dissect*
* Bono has a habit of getting his facts wrong but still gives us an opinion

I read Lemmy's autobiography a few years ago (White Line Fever). Very revealing and quite shocking in some places. Back in the late '90s, I used to go to a second hand store just near the Royal Infirmary called Sound Bytes and the guy who owned it was a big rock/heavy metal fan, but said that he wasn't too big on Motorhead although he liked Lemmy as a character. That's what another guy I knew told me when I mentioned Lemmy to him. He was more into Hawkwind.

I am sure these comments must be tax deductable.... He wrote a tribute to my favourite singer, Billy MacKenzie of The Associates, who took his own life back in 97 and it was included in the posthumous release of Billys latest album...Spoiled an otherwise perfect album for me. The good thing about Lemmy is most of the tributes are genuine, as I posted I don't like the music of Motorhead, but the guy himself is a proper legend and deserves respect.
