So many great performances, both as lead and in character parts. By a strange coincidence I was trying to track down "The Disappearance", a film he did in 1977, this afternoon. An hour later heard the news he'd died.

Sad to see him go, made many great performances. Two that spring to mind and are quite different but both very well acted are,
Mr X - JFK Oddball - Kellys Heroes
DS also appeared in some 60s British series such as The Saint.
RIP.

An actor who had a very long and varied career, had many roles in mainstream films but also starred in cult movies and lesser known films but was always excellent in what he done. RIP

Starred and acted in tons of good stuff, Invasion of the Body Snatchers sprung instantly to mind as an iconic performance.
RIP Donald Sutherland.

A great actor - particularly liked him in "The Eagle Has Landed' and "The Hunger Games' films. Just finished rewatching "Pillars of the Earth" in which he also appears.
RIP Donald.

Superb actor. Can I be the first one to mention his two appearances in Man in a Suitcase? It always seemed bizarre that an actor of his international profile had figured in ITC shows. Kudos. RIP.

Thanks Barry, I'll keep an eye out. There is a version on a well known video sharing site, but it's a non-director's cut hacked down to 80mins, and the picture quality is pretty poor.

Excellent in both of those episodes playing very different characters in an equally convincing manner. Can I be the first to mention his appearance in The Avengers? As you say, it seems odd that someone of his standing would appear in such shows but I suppose everyone has to start somewhere and around the time of his appearance in those 2 series he was on the cusp of hitting the big time. RIP.

I would like to give a big shout out to the Donald Sutherland TV movie Citizen X (1995). It also features people like Stephen Rea, Max Von Sydow and Joss Ackland, and although Rea plays the lead role, Sutherland also plays a very important character. If you haven’t seen it it’s about the notorious true life Russian serial killer Andrei Chikatilo but even if the subject matter isn’t your thing don’t let that put you off because it’s a fantastic little investigation/procedural hunt movie that isn’t quite what you expect and doesn’t always get the attention it deserves.
Highly recommended.

Watched him in an episode of Gideons way just last week. Playing the evil oddball to perfection.
You could never accuse him of not varying the roles he played.
A truly excellent actor.
RIP

He trained in England and did a couple of years in British repertory theatre. Him being based here at the start of his career probably accounts for his appearances in British TV and film - he's part of the rather electic cast of Dr Terror's House of Horrors along with Roy Castle, Alan "Fluff" Freeman, Kenny Lynch as well as the illustrious Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.

There were of course many north Americans in ITC shows, but they tended to be fairly established on USA TV, and recruited on that basis. It was less-usual for an ITC actor to become a major movie star later, although obviously Roger Moore was an exception.
I did enjoy Donald's ITC appearances and I also liked him in 'Kelly's Heroes' where his character was effectively a late-60s USA hippy in wartime Europe.

RIP Donald Sutherland. I watched him in some of the grotesque films out, strangely enough. Crackers, The Mechanic, for example. Interesting actor who made those films work.
