That's a shame, like many on here I really enjoyed Hazell. Nicholas Ball played the role to a T. So much so that when I read the novels a few years back, I could almost hear his voice in my head speaking the first person narration. Remember him being pretty good in an episode of Bergerac as costa del crime dwelling heavy villain. Given it's the 80th anniversary of D-Day it seems appropriate to also give a nod to the the 1975 film Overlord in which he has a major supporting role.

I remember him best for his Hammer House of Horror episode "The House That Bled to Death' as I never liked his "Hazel" series. He was another actor who quietly had a very long career which lasted a very impressive 60 years. As well as the Hammer episode I've also got him on disc in "Lifeforce", "Bergerac" and "Hustle".
RIP Nicholas.

I saw him in the 1969 thriller The Gold Robbers (playing the son of the detective investigating the robbery) which Talking Pictures showed earlier this year.

Somehow I've never seen Hazell but really should. I do though know Nicholas Ball from other things, in which he was always a welcome presence. Only ever heard good things about his most famous role (if you discount EastEnders as I very much always do...). RIP.

I was sad to see this online earlier today. He had that casual easy grace to his acting style very much like Lewis Collins and Dennis Waterman had also Dennis Blanch has. I've liked him in everything I've seen him in.
Hazell is an outstanding series and one that is often touted as a precursor to Minder (along with 'Turtle's Progress') those that haven't seen Hazell you really need to purchase the dvd (which contains both series) I bought it back in 2011 and it's first class drama. It's still available for under £20 brand new plus it features the brilliant Desmond McNamara as Cousin Tel who sometimes helps Hazell out.
Here's just over a minute of clips from various Hazell episodes
RIP

You definitely need to get this it's a great series, good story lines, lots of outside locations and Nicholas Ball's character of Hazell is very likeable. I remember that Network DVD spend a lot of money and went to a lot of trouble to release series 2 as there were issues over rights or blocking or something, they didn't have this issue with series 1. Forum thread here: linkI've just looked now and cheapest I can find the dvd boxset (brand new) listed for is £18.99 (plus free delivery) with Hit here link

Ended up ordering the recently released Aussie version of Hazell for the same price as from Hit, but from Amazon. Looking forward to righting my wrong by finally watching the series - and in doing so pay tribute to Nicholas Ball.

I’m sure you’ll enjoy it, Alan - it’s decent enough without ever really hitting the heights it could have done. There’s some shocking studio scenes trying to pass for outside filming but generally it’s pretty good.
Apart from Hazell and The House That Bled To Death, I remember him for playing 'Jim Morrison' (no, not that one!) in The Young Ones episode ‘Interesting'.
RIP.

Sad to learn, he was a good actor with a long career of decent work (and LifeForce - i jest) Anyone who appeared in one of my favourite sitcoms (Colin's Sandwich) is deserving of praise in my book 👍🏻
RIP Sir

Yes, he was fab in Colin's Sandwich, which is also a favourite of mine. Another comedy role of his I vividly remember is a guest spot in Red Dwarf as a rogue android - does a really good mickey take of Rutger Hauer in Bladerunner.

Yes, he was fab in Colin's Sandwich, which is also a favourite of mine. Everything you’ve said so far is my experience too Alan. Somehow I’ve never bothered with Hazell either. Colin’s Sandwich - played a great role as a complete ****. Red Dwarf - “I Lied Twice” Hammer House - a decent episode. Everything I’ve seen him in he’s been really good but they’ve all been bit parts. R.I.P. Nicholas Ball

Was very sad to read of his passing.
Only really knew him from Hazel and EastEnders, but Hazell become a favourite of mine thanks to Talking Pictures.
I knew he worked all his career, but I would have thought Hazell would have lead to more high profile roles, but no lead roles followed.
Was also a shame Hazell got binned after two series, as the quality of the filming improved in series two and the series with it.
RIP

Sad news , as another favourite from " our era of TV " passes away . I will always remember him as Hazell , with his green Triumph Stag & also a less familiar role , along side Nick Berry , in the short lived Harbour Lights .

Yep, Hazell was very good, co-written by Terry Venables (not everyone may be aware of that).

What amazes me is that article does not mention Hazell the tv series that he is more famous for rather than a sodding soap opera called Eastenders, the only time it does is in the comments section below it. R.I.P Nicholas.

It's a mad film, and although I really enjoyed it when I watched a year or two back, I don't suppose it's one as an actor you'd want to be remembered for.

Because if you like The Sweeney, Minder, Out and similar stuff from the late-70s/early-80s, then I'm sure you'll like Hazell.

If Portland Road or others are considering buying it I suggest you do so soon, the two series box set is getting a re-release via Old Gold Media on 1st July 2024 at the price of £32.99 but brand new Network copies are still available cheaper, Hit did have it at £18.99 but their website is not working today so the next cheapest I've found is it at Rarewaves (brand new) for £19.44 with free delivery link hereI highly recommend Hazell, Nicholas Ball is amazing in this and it's well worth £19.44 of anyone's money and these last of the Network copies won't remain available at this price for long.

A good actor. I think Hazell deserved a spin-off movie like The Sweeney. It could have been interesting. Probably would have had an X-rating. Nicholas Ball was a very believable leading man.
For me, he was easily the best thing about Thief Takers series 3. A decent replacement for David Sterne. His character had a quite shady past, but he was still a sharp cookie.
He also wanted Hazell to be an all-film production like Strangers became.

Talking Pictures has shown Hazell before. It's how I first watched it.
Well worth buying on DVD if you have the cash, but pretty sure it will get a repeat on TPTV in the near future with his passing.
