William Russell who played first Doctor Who companion Ian Chesterton has passed away aged 99.
He recently returned to the programme in 2022 for a very brief but very funny cameo in The Power of the Doctor.
R.I.P.

Doctor Who's original hero and an absolute legend. We were lucky to have him for so long. Such a talent. RIP.

When I see him in The Great Escape, I sometimes think “So that’s what Ian did during the war.” He was great in Doctor Who. Rest In Peace

Very sad news, but a great age. I can still remember when I first saw An Unearthly Child (when the BBC repeated the Serial), was the first time I had seen Doctor Who, in Black and White, of course, since then, I have seen a lot of 1960's Doctor Who. William Russell, will always be an important part of the History of Classic Doctor Who. I have got the 1950s series The Adventures of Sir Lancelot (in which William, played the title role), on DVD, a series, which I have yet to watch. R.I.P. William Russell. www.BBC.co.uk/news/articles/c988nnnjy5go

I remember when I was 14, An Unearthly Child was released on VHS, it was my birthday the next Month and my mum bought me it for my birthday, but I insisted that I "played it first,to make sure it played okay" then gave it to her back to wrap up for my birthday.
When I owned it properly, I showed the first episode to my mate Leigh and upon seeing Ian Chesterton and Barbara in Ian's car, waiting outside the junkyard,he innocently asked "is he the doctor?"
