It has emerged that Richard Tandy, the musician who was primarily a keyboard player in the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), died on 1st May.
Richard was one of the musicians on the Birmingham music scene in the 1960s, and knew Bev Bevan from schooldays.
He occasionally guested with The Move, e.g. playing harpsichord on the no. 1 single 'Blackberry Way', and also on live performances.
During this period he joined The Ugly's (led by Steve Gibbons), one of the Birmingham bands like The Idle Race (Jeff Lynne) and Balls (Trevor Burton & Denny Laine) that didn't get major success, though some of their members attained this elsewhere.
Richard joined the initial line-up of ELO as the bass-guitarist after their first album had been released, but just prior to Roy Wood leaving. When Roy left, there was a line-up shuffle and Richard switched to keyboards, and was an integral part of their classic period from c.1976-81 for which they are best remembered.
He played on all subsequent albums except 'Alone In the Universe' (2015), which was effectively by Jeff Lynne alone.
However, he was an ongoing member of the band until his death, playing e.g., at Glastonbury in 2016 & 2017 and on their north American tour in 2019.
Thus he was one of the four ELO members who were specifically inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, alongside Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood and Bev Bevan.
R.I.P. Richard Tandy.

Although I kind of got into music a fair bit later when the New Romantics burst onto the scene, I did have and still have a massive soft spot for ELO. Some great albums and Richard Tandy was very much a part of what was IMO their peak period. RIP.
