This is very sad.
Granted, I never saw him win his medal but this advert was on what seemed to be every time I watched TV as a kid (which was a lot) making me think David Wilkie was a good guy, role model and someone we should all aspire to be as an adult.
Years later he's told off for swimming too fast at his local pool by a jobsworth lifeguard, you couldn't make it up.
And it's Wilkie! RIP to a real 70s Superstar.

RIP. Yes, sad to read this. Part of 70s culture, and ofcourse have to mention Mark Spitz, the human fish.

An Aberdeen loon by all accounts, until you read he was born abroad and schooled at a posh Edinburgh boarding school.
His folks were both from Aberdeen though, so that was the link to here. We'll claim him though.
He was at a swimming club training us kids one day back in the 80s and I can remember him being nice.
Gave up his career aged just 22.
Swimming was the only sport I was ever good at, but my goodness it was elitist and sadly still very much the case.
RIP
