Died unexpectedly last night, very talented performer both as himself and as Lily Savage, performed stand up presented tv and radio shows both comedic and seriously. Done a lot for various charities, his autobiography is a worthwhile read.RIP

He also appeared in forum favourite 'The Bill'. RIP Paul.

Sad news. I remember sometimes watching the Paul O'Grady Show on weekday tea-times - he had a good sense of humour. RIP Paul.

I met him in 2011 when he was a guest at The Avengers 50th Anniversary event at Chichester. He was a huge fan of the show (he used to close his Sunday R2 show with the tag scene music from Season 6) and he became good friends with Linda Thorson in particular. He was exactly as you saw on screen - funny, mad, sharp as a tack and more than happy to chat with everyone. I took this picture and a few others of him with one of our number who entered the fancy dress competition (and won IIRC): A very sad loss. RIP.

Sad to hear R I P Paul.
I remember him when he appeared as Lily Savage and was a great comedian and also was on Blankety Blank which was a big hit,who would have thought back he would be on prime time tv back then similar to Danny La Rue,times change.

A very versatile and talented entertainer. Particularly enjoyed his Sunday teatime Radio 2 show that finished last year. Very sad news. 67 is no age. RIP Paul.

A great talent and a genuine working class boy who rose to the top of his profession when comedy was almost Oxbridge only.

Hugely funny as the caustic Lily Savage (his Avengers spoofs were fabulously hilarious but affectionate) and always a likeable presence, even if he was presenting programmes that I would otherwise never be caught watching. A warm, witty presence and by all accounts, what you saw on TV was how he was off screen too. A big fan of The Avengers and, as such, one of us. Massive loss. RIP.

Very sad loss A gifted comedy performer and a sublimely good chat show host who actually allowed his guests to talk ! Refreshingly down to earth and possessing a natural charm that allowed people to instantly feel at ease.
I had the pleasure to see his "Savage" act just before he made the big time when he was compére for Bernard Manning in Blackpool - blew him off the stage (that sounds like something Lily would have done ! 😆)
Sweet natured man with a love of animals and always looked razor sharp in a suit , definitely one of the good guys.
RIP Sir

A big fan of The Avengers and, as such, one of us. Massive loss. RIP. There was a nice tribute from Linda Thorson, about how he'd saved her life during covid, calling an ambulance for her despite her fear of going to hospitals. I'm not that familiar with his work, but everything I've read about him since his death says he was one of the good guys.

I remember an episode of his ITV/Channel 4 show where he banged on about 'The Avengers' for ages with one of the guests, he was clearly a mega-fan.

Very sad. He was a brilliantly funny performer and a very gifted TV personality. I would never watch chat shows really but he had one for a while that was always good. I enjoyed his Radio 2 show and cannot see why he was taken off that. HIs autobiography runs across about four volumes and they are all excellent. They are funny and so well observed, I would not hesitate to recommend them.

I saw him in the stage version of cell block H back in the 90s and despite never being a fan of the show or drag acts in general, he was very, very funny.
He had that acid tounge that certain camp comedians can use well and used it to great effect with hecklers.
Just came across as a one of the good guys and didn't forget where he came from.
As mentioned above, his autobiographal series of books are very good.
RIP

I seem to remember the Lily Savage character being on late-night shows in the late-1980s, alongside e.g., the early Enfield & Whitehouse characters.
Drag characters can be cliched and irritating, but Paul took Lily Savage beyond this, and it was a good characterisation of a certain kind of bitchy, ear-to-the-ground female.
Paul O'Grady later became known in his own right, as an entertainer and person of several facets, and an all-round 'good egg'.
R.I.P. Paul O'Grady.
