After Thin Lizzy came the Rats, never as talented as Lizzy of course, but an important way station for us in Ireland that we could be good at something apart from fightin' an' drinkin'
RIP Garry.

By sad co-incidence the 2020 Alan Yentob documentary about The Rats was on BBC4 just the other day. Lots of commentators saying how important The Rats were for Irish music internationally in the period between Lizzy and U2 and indeed, Bono is quite heavily featured. www.BBC.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000jjr5/citizens-of-boomtown-the-story-of-the-boomtown-ratsI read 'Is That It?' when it came out in the 1980s and Geldof was pretty honest about the band and why they disbanded so I was surprised 4 of the remaining 5 of them got back together in 2013 to play the nostalgia circuit. In the last few days the tributes to Garry Roberts have been along the lines of a powerhouse of a rhythm guitar player driving the sound along, with a real punk ethic of playing hard and playing loud. RIP
