He starred in some good movies. That rip off of Double Indemnity they did with him and Kathleen Turner was decent. I also love that episode of Nightmares and Dreamscapes - Battleground, where he plays a hit man and he kills a toy maker only to have his house invaded by evil toy soldiers out for revenge. Superb that is! A History of Violence is a top film. Mr Brooks was interesting, where he plays Kevin Costner’s psychopathic alter ego/imaginary friend. Altered States, that’s funny, where he devolves into a man-monkey. He was one of those actors that never really stood out but could be relied upon to do a very decent job. I’m convinced had he chose a different stage name he’d probably have been better remembered and had more success. For some reason I always used to find myself mixing up John Heard, William Hurt, John Hurt and John Savage. Even though they were all very different actors. RIP Mr Hurt.

A History of Violence is a top film. I liked him in that - sinister in a very low key way. As you say always put in a decent performance. Quite odd seeing him in Ch4 suburban robot drama Humans. He was good in that as well though, much as you'd expect.

RIP William Hurt. He was great in the film Gorky Park, where he plays an investigator in Moscow

He had a long string of successful films throughout the 80s, and won the Best Actor Oscar for Kiss Of The Spider Woman. RIP
