Sadly, the actor probably known for appearing as ‘Boycie’ in Only Fools And Horses has died at the age of 79 after a battle with cancer. He will also be known on here for his appearances in The Sweeney, Z Cars, Thriller and Doctor Who (The Seeds Of Doom). He recently did the commentary on a documentary about Serbia which led to him being given honorary Serbian citizenship.
RIP.

Very sorry to hear of John's passing. I didn't even know he was unwell since he'd been active up until relatively recently, or so it seemed anyway. I thought he was great as Boycie in Only Fools and Horses, but I think maybe the less said about The Green Green Grass the better. How that was allowed to go on for so long is beyond me...

My main squeeze met him a couple of times. She said both John and his wife Carol were absolutely lovely people. So down to earth and friendly. When I told her this afternoon she was very sad to hear the news. She said out of the famous people and couples she’s met, they were definitely one of the most normal. She added that he was nothing like Boycie in real life, which considering how big the character is kind of caught her off guard as how without really thinking about it she assumed he’d be the same.
RIP John.

Very sad news. He seemed to have a lot of time for his fans which not all personalities do and relished being associated with the part rather than resenting it. Looking back, his character in the Sweeney episode Stay Lucky Eh is a bit of a proto-Boycie.

This is very sad news . I have been getting messages all day from friends , asking whether I knew he had passed away , as I was always known for my impressions of him .
I met John Challis at a Classic Car Show , at Bath & West Showground , a couple of years ago & had a long chat with him . He was a really nice , down to earth guy .

Settled not a million miles away from me in N.Herefordshire. Very well regarded in the local community, notably as the active patron of an animal hospital. Great as Boycie and he embraced the role, but worth remembering the man himself was very different to the part he played.

I had a vague memory that he sometimes turned up in ITC shows, but other than a small part in 'Strange Report' (1969) this appears not to be the case.
However, John did have a wide range of cult TV appearances before OFAH, including 'Coronation Street' and 'Big Breadwinner Hog' (I am not sure if I previously spotted him in this, amongst many other familiar faces).
And, as mentioned, in the period immediately preceding OFAH, he sort of prepared for the 'Boycie' character with guest roles in 'The Sweeney' and 'Citizen Smith'.
R.I.P. John Challis.

He was very active and well liked on Twitter, where I discovered how huge he was in Serbia. He was also a Twitter friend of the rapper Ice-T.
Boycie has to be one of the best characters from any sitcom.
RIP John.
