Sadly the great actor Tony Selby died yesterday, on this site we probably all know him from his three appearances in Minder but has a huge back catalogue on British tv, Get some in was my favourite role when he played the horrible corporal Marsh RIP

This is sad news , especially after the " false alarm " report , a couple of months ago . As mentioned above , he was brilliant in Minder & The Sweeney , but I always best remember him for playing Cpl Marsh in Get Some In . He also played numerous characters in sketches , in The Dick Emery Show . R.I.P Tony

Sorry to read this, I liked Tony Selby in whatever he turned up in. He had the natural look of a 'heavy' or 'minder' type.
'Queens Pawn' is one of the better Sweeney episodes imo and I always enjoy watching him in 'Villain' alongside Richard Burton and many other well known faces.
R.I.P Tony.

Another of the faces that I grew up with on TV - we all know of his long and varied career and the talent he had that enabled him to effortlessly switch between crime drama "Heavy" and sitcom stalwart - he will be missed.
RIP Sir

Played very different charcters in his one Sweeney and three Minder appearances. Was in lots of stuff over the years and always a solid performance.

Yes, very sad. He was in a lot of stuff but to me he is best remembered as Corporal Marsh.

A great character actor with some memorable roles in The Avengers, Department S, The Sweeney and of course, Minder. A sad loss.
RIP.

RIP Tony Selby. He was great in Minder and The Sweeney and he was also great as Sabalom Glitz on Doctor Who where he was like an intergalactic Arthur Daley.

Very very sad news - I received a reply to a letter from him a few years ago which was very friendly.
If I get time, I'll scan it here.
RIP Tony

RIP Sir I liked his appearance in Cockneys vs Zombies where he mostly provided comic relief, but with an occasional glimpse of the threatening personna he brought to his heavy roles.
"Wrong leg ****hole." (Proceeds to beat zombie into the ground with his artificial limb).

I remember first seeing him when I was a child in 'Mulberry', 'The Detectives' and as the rag n' bone man (Sam) in 'The Good Life'. He really has been in a lot of stuff his IMDB page goes back to 1951. I found even when playing a fairly unlikeable character you couldn't help but like the person he was playing. I read somewhere (probably on here) that when filming 'Days Of Fines and Closures' George Cole teased him over the Scottish accent he was portraying saying words to the effect of "come on Selby we had Billy Connolly here last week" so I'm guessing he was a nice guy who didn't take himself to seriously (as some actors do). I for one would love to see the letter he sent jno posted on here (if you have time to). RIP

Very sorry to hear of the Tony's passing. As others have mentioned, he had numerous roles both straight and comic, and across many production genres e.g. cinema film, ITC, Euston, BBC, ITV regional.
I should also mention he had quite a prominent support role in 'Witchfinder General' (1968) alongside similar stalwart actors like Nicky Henson, Robert Russell, Bernard Kay, Godfrey James and Margaret Nolan.
R.I.P. Tony Selby.

Thanks for posting. Until I read that I hadn't noticed that the same director (Chris King) was used for both his appearances as Jack. What I found particularly interesting was when he mentioned that "in those days casting, writers and directors knew actors work and just asked if you were available" that probably goes on the explain why so many appeared in all three of Minder, The Sweeney and The Professionals as well as so many other similar shows at the time. Also it explains why a lot of performers felt so right for the part as the writer possibly had that person in mind from the point of character creation.

A shame to read this. A very dependable character actor who appeared in just about everything.
RIP Tony

RIP Tony Selby. He was great in Minder and The Sweeney and he was also great as Sabalom Glitz on Doctor Who where he was like an intergalactic Arthur Daley. His performance in Queen's Pawn was excellent - the superficially cheerful cockney chappy who's really a cold blooded thug. Summed up so many professional criminal types long before the age of the celebrity gangsters, with their self serving memoirs and "we only hurt our own" schtick. Selby's Johnny Lyon is the authentic article I think.
