Always remember Rory Bremner stating when he met Murray, he said "you've met and commentated on all the greats, Fangio, Graham Hill, Senna... who was your favourite?"
Murray thought for a while and said "Jim Rosenthal". Whether it's true or not I couldn't say, but it would be typical of something Murray would say. Bless him.
R.I.P. Murray Walker.

Murray was Mr. Motorsport for so many years, and even appeared on F1 shows up to 5 or 6 years ago.
Some career, spanning the history of F1, he commentated on the first F1 race at Silverstone back in 1950.

My fondest & earliest memories of Murray Walker , was his commentating on Saturday afternoon rallycross on World of Sport in the 70s . As soon as Dickie Davis , said " We now return to Lydden Hill & join Murray Walker " , you could expect an afternoon of fun . I always used to find it hilarious , when he mis pronounced the names of many of the Scandinavian drivers . Bjorn Waldegaard , had many variations .!! RIP MURRAY .

I know older people will probably say Formula 1's golden era was the 1960s, but people forget that it wasn't even really televised until the 'Grand Prix' highlights show came along on Sunday nights in 1978, and only the European rounds were televised live through the 80s and 90s. For me, that period was a truly great time for the sport with Mansell, Prost, Senna and later Damon Hill vs the cheating Schumacher, and I loved the excitement Murray Walker brought to it as he was, first and foremost, a fan himself. His partnership with James Hunt was perfect - the enthusiast and the wry, sometimes cynical and controversial expert.
At school we all used to do impressions of Murray and years later one of the main reasons I bought a Playstation in 1997 was the Formula 1 game which I was delighted to find had Murray Walker doing the commentary. I would generally race as Damon Hill and sometimes used to crash deliberately just to hear Murray shouting "It's Hill! He's hit the barrier!!"
Jackie Stewart said on Radio 5 Live last night that Murray's was "a life well-lived". I have his autobiography and would concur, he considered himself very lucky to spend his life covering something he loved so much.
