Lead singer and main songwriter of the American group The Cars, who I have to say have one of the best debut albums I have ever heard.
Seems to be a bit of dispute as to when he was born hence the ? in the date field.
RIP Ric

Aww no. ‘Oh Heartbeat City, here we come. And happy days count on thumbs.’ He also wrote Drive, one of my all time favourite songs, even if he didn’t sing it. RIP Ric.

They are reporting he was born in 1944 so he was 75 when died. He was 34 when The Cars formed.

I had three dates of birth for him online and even some of the reports had him aged between 70-75.

That is a shock. He also did a few solo albums as well with a 1986 hit "Emotion In Motion" as well
RIP Ric

The Cars were excellent. Their debut, and follow up album, Candy-O, epitomized the new wave scene coming out of America at the time. Essential listening. From my memory, The Cars at Live Aid (USA) had the same effect as Queen at Live Aid (UK) in blowing everyone else away on the day. Rest in Peace Ric, and thanks for the music. Hopefully making music with Benjamin Orr already!

I never realised he was a producer for quite a few bands that I wouldn't have associated him with. He got a lot of tributes paid to him by quite a few alternative artists.

I have the DVDs of Live Aid and I see what you mean about the Cars there, Ace. Yes, they were fantastic on the day. Infact, the US Live Aid show was far, far better than the British show.
