Oh no! What a shame that is. Had some decent solo tracks as well, particularly ‘Homosapien’.
RIP.

A great songwriter. !978 was his year. No other ‘punk’ artist was writing love songs at the time and no one else was writing love songs with the kind of twist that he was. Very sad. RIP

Im all cut up. There've been a good/bad fair few deaths that've made me actually gasp in the last few years and there've been a fair few that've done that and killed my heart a little bit. This is one of the latter. Pete Shelley was a wonderful man. A real hero of my younger days. So much more than simply the front man of a very successful punk-pop crossover band, but a great songwriter, a great wit, a man of culture, a man of many sides, a great Northerner (in the classically chippy sense) and a remarkable pioneer of gay cultural identity in the punk and post-punk milieu. Diminutive, slight, but brave and brilliant. God bless him. Rest in Peace Pete, and thanks for the music.

Saw The Buzzcocks playing in Cheltenham in the early 2000s, in an upstairs alternative night club. Pete and Co really gave it 100%. Sweatiest gig I've ever been to!

I was really shocked when Mrs MIAS told me this sad news last night. The Buzzcocks were one of the best new wave bands. 63 is no age.
RIP Pete.

I was looking at the Buzzcocks chart history and found it hard to believe they have never had a top 10 single or album.
I found that shocking.

Sad news & a great tribute show on 6 Music this evening. Barry the book and I had the pleasure of seeing Buzzcocks live, in the old Truro City Hall, back in 1992

I heard some of that 6 Music tribute. I had absolutely no idea that he wrote the iconic theme tune that was used for Ch4’s Tour de France coverage back in the 80’s and early 90’s. Quite a coincidence that Paul Sherwen, who was a co-commentator on that show and subsequently ITV4’s coverage, also died unexpectedly this week.

On top of the legacy of the Buzzcocks, Pete Shelley branched out into the extremely cool and timeless theme tune to Channel 4's Tour De France coverage from the mid 80s onwards.
Btw, Paul Sherwen who was co commentator on this with Phil Liggett also passed away suddenly last week.

It is very similar to Jean Michel Jarre. And that is no bad thing if you ask me. I always liked the way he worked frere jacques into it. Good memories

Yes, I looked up the opening titles on YouTube a couple of years ago and it instantly brought back memories of what for me was a golden age of The Tour - Lemond, Fignon, Delgado, Millar, Theunisse, Breukink etc. (although we now know that most of their performances were erm, enhanced) and it’s testament to Shelley’s theme that it can instantly evoke such memories.

Yes, a great era for cycling, before the bull sh1t factor kicked in. Always preferred it as a minority sport. loved watching it on C4, it suited the stations left field image perfectly

Very sorry to hear this, and most unexpected.
In musical terms, there is no reason why he couldn't have had bigger hits over a greater period of years, as per The Stranglers or Paul Weller.
The Buzzcocks music of c.1978-79 remains very potent. As per ltd (post above), I saw them live in a more recent period in their career - in my case in 1999 at the town hall, and they were in storming form.
His solo 'Homosapien' album (1981) and its title track were great as well.
R.I.P. Pete Shelley.
