Coz I'm like right brainy me, I love pickchuz and stuff. Especially them that has lots of colours. Colourz make me appy. I like them ones wiv animals too. Especially when they are given anthropomorfick adventures and stuff to do. Right funny they are. Anyway... Once upon a time, some Dutch fellas found some pencils and paint, some canvas and a chair to sit down on, and then they started to draw a bit. Turns out they were really good at it as well. So here lies some of my bestest Dutch artists.. But out of the list which Dutch artist(s) do you like? Go on...... Pretend you wuz Sister Wendy and go pick 2. Oh yeah, and don't forget to tell us why. Jan SteenVincent Van GoghPieter ClaeszWillem De KooningFrans Hals Johannes Vermeer M.C. Escher Piet MondrianHieronymus BoschRembrandt

I could do a similar poll for German artists... Maybe one day Chris, when you're Death Match Overlord.

Vermeer's Girl With Towel On Head (pictured) is super-sweet.
I like Bosch coz his paintings are well mental. As dark as wet crows some of his paintings are. Very disturbing.
I've seen a load of Van Gogh's stuff. What amazed me was when I went to see them for real (not on tele or in a book), was just how vivid and bright they are. Like seeing them for the first time.
Pieter Claesz's attention to detail is just phenomenal.

Bosch's paintings are great. I had 2 prints of his, looked like Hell. Van Gough as well, anyone who cuts his ear off gets respect from me.
Update, the Bosch prints I had were Tondals Vision and Garden of The Earthly Delights (part 3 - Hell) Not the kind of art you'd find at Athena Posters.

Escher - That picture is the stuff of genius, the sort of picture you could view everyday for 100 years and find something different in it everyday, the sign of great art.
Claesz - Again the stuff of genius, just look at the globe part of the picture and see the skill in what he has done in this one part of the picture alone and then marvel at the clarity and skill of the rest of this painting.
I could easily have picked another couple of artist on the list though and have to admit to not being to enthused by Rembrandt, but I am sure the art world will recover from this shock news.

A lot of good choices. I rather like Van Gogh's painting, Irisies, so I'll vote for him.

I was just thinking this morning when, oh when, is the Minder forum going to start discussing Dutch art, and here we all are! Rembrandt.

Bosch for me, but then I'm a gloomy sod and quite keen on fire and damnation.
I don't know much about Dutch art, or any art, come to that, but a few years ago visited the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. I found myself fascinated by the numerous paintings of the Dutch and Flemish landscapes of yesteryear - they seemed to have a mysterious brooding quality to them which I rather liked.

I went in 2002 and in 2003 they shut the main building down for 10 years. Thankfully it is now back in action. It was Spring 2010 - I think it had largely been re-opened by then, although I do seem to recall a fair amount of building works in the area.

I like Bosch coz his paintings are well mental. As dark as wet crows some of his paintings are. Very disturbing. Why am I not surprised ? (Just joking) Always loved art at school and beyond. When I wagged school I'd go to the art gallery or the museum. (Sad but True!) I also had a crush on my Yr 12 art history teacher so I studied a lot. I've always liked Escher's bizarre staircases, love Mondrian's cubist simplicity, and I agree that Van Gogh's paintings are beautiful when you are able to stand right in front of them to see the colour and brush strokes. Van Gogh is my clear favourite. I love Claesz. Have you ever tried to paint a glass ? Well I have and it's flipping impossible. I know Rembrandt is a 'master' but I've never been a huge fan of the subject matter. I have no idea which two I will vote for.

I like his insane paintings but I prefer others on this list.. I voted Vermeer and The Girl With The Pearl Earing - I could look at that forever, and Pieter who I think is class (did you see what I just did there ) His skill is just genius. The light on the glass, the reflection etc..... As you say, its just insanely good. Never fear Karin, we seem to have had positive responses for this art DM, so rest assured there will be more.

Bosch should be the winner. Went on to invent electric power tools as well. Bloke down the pub told me that!

I think it's fair to say young Arch is doing a good job on here. I would politely advise all members not to be too quick with their "why isn't this on the list" type comments though - let's remember this is a bit of fun down here and not to be taken too seriously - if you would like to research and create regular death matches on behalf of the forum in future please feel free to add that to any complaints about missing items from death match lists.

Only ones I've heard is Van Gogh (remember Charlie O'Keefe in Manageress?) and Rembrandt. I have only heard of Mondrian, thanks to an episode of Hustle but though it was rubbish. I'm a bit like Justin (Look, it ain't even got a plug on it) when it comes to the painters themselves but like a bit of art here and there. A fan of Lowry, for what it's worth...

I can not think of many Dutch Artists that have had any hit songs at all....Nope not one sorry.😂
Bosch is okay but Phillip's is a much better brand of tool imo.😁
