The Guardian has an obituary for the screenwriter who will be best known on here for his work on Minder and particularly The Sweeney but also contributed to Callan, Public Eye, Special Branch, Fox and Out to name but a few. A true script writing legend.
RIP.

Excellent writer and arguably, The Sweeney's best writer. I always thought so, his episodes usually had a touch of authenticity about them and often a social realist dimension as well e.g the Monk family in Money Money Money. Fox and Out were both great.

An absolutely superb writer, you only have to see 'Out' and 'Fox' to see how good he was.

I didn't know he had died. Very sorry to hear about this. He had a particular understanding how villainy existed within families and 'firms', a revelation for the audience, who didn't normally have this insight. He came across as a bluff character on DVD commentaries, suggesting that his scripts were influenced by personal experience. R.I.P. Trevor Preston, a great screenwriter indeed.

He did commentaries as part of the Sweeney dvd extras for the episodes 'Ringer' S1 and 'Abduction' S4 iirc, alongside DW and possibly Ted Childs.
R.I.P Trevor Preston.

He came across as a bluff character on DVD commentaries, suggesting that his scripts were influenced by personal experience. Spot on PR. I'm sure he had mixed with some colourful characters in his youth but it certainly made better entertainment for fans of his work in years to come. Actually, he might even have mentioned this in the commentaries but I could be wrong. RIP.

IIRC in the commentaries, and certainly in the book 'Sweeney: The Official Companion' (Fairclough & Keenan) he mentioned his experiences around the police and villains.
He wasn't a villain himself (as per e.g. Tony Hoare) but he probably observed things that happened as a youth in his neighbourhood.

He did commentaries as part of the Sweeney dvd extras for the episodes 'Ringer' S1 and 'Abduction' S4 iirc, alongside DW and possibly Ted Childs. He also did a couple of episodes each of "Out" and "Fox". I recall he seemed a bit annoyed in the latter, possibly with some justification, that Eastenders had nicked his trademark ideas and debased them to the extent that they'd become ridiculous cliches e.g. nasty firms of cockney villains, the local pub, and fam-ur-lee.

I have both 'Out' and 'Fox' in my collection but haven't watched the Extras. I'll have to have a look as it sounds interesting ltd

A sad month indeed, in which we have lost two 'Euston-era' stalwarts, Trevor Preston and Glynn Edwards.
