Hello everyone. I have taken control of the Death Matches for a while after jno's embarrassing obsession with Bryan Adams resulted in far too many complaints. During my tenure in charge, as one might expect, you can look forward to sheer awesomeness! I fully intend to continue this thread in the same way it has been brought to you up until now but with less double denim and 80s soft rock. Like before, all suggestions are welcome, so as with jno just PM me.
So welcome to the latest Death Match and up first comes this suggestion from: our very own Leopard From Lime Street Billy Farmer. You may choose two answers

I can confirm that from 101 on, the death match mantle has been entrusted to Arch Stanton. In reference to this statement though... I have taken control of the Death Matches for a while after jno's embarrassing obsession with Bryan Adams resulted in far too many complaints. I checked the forum analytics and came up with this... Meanwhile, back on topic it is one vote for John Hillermann!

I like lots of them but voted for David Burke and Edward Hardwicke who were Watson to Jeremy Brett's Holmes.

I'll have to give this one some thought. It was much easier to pick a favorite Sherlock Holmes.
I respectfully point out that you misssed Patrick Macnee who played Watson to the Holmes of both Roger Moore and Christopher Lee.

I respectfully point out that you misssed Patrick Macnee who played Watson to the Holmes of both Roger Moore and Christopher Lee. I respectfully hear your point of view PR1. However under my watch The Death Match will be exactly what it says on the tin. It is not intended to be some comprehensive list for fans to tick off and pick apart. That is not the idea behind The Death Match. If someone or something is not listed on a death match I have compiled, that is because I never wanted it to be involved in the first place. Such is the power I now wield as The Death Match Caretaker (No.2). Do not fear the power. Embrace the power. Rest assured Pr1, I don't make mistakes... All things are considered, some left out on purpose. Often to frustrate and make things more interesting. So if something is missing then there is a greater logic behind that omission than even you can fathom... Enjoy.

I didn't realize you weren't being comprehensive. I can't fault you on this decesion Arch because Macnee was a lousy Watson.

A very difficult choice, I like a lot of the Actors (listed above), who played Watson, but the choices for the top two, would be between Nigel Bruce, Andre Morell, Nigel Stock, James Mason, David Burke and Edward Hardwicke, I will have a good think.
My first Watson, was Nigel Bruce, and despite his bumbling portrayal of Dr Watson, I have always thought that Rathbone and Bruce, made a great team.
The only Watson (listed above), who I have never seen, is John Hillerman, I know a lot of Sherlock fans, don't rate either Hands of a Murderer, or Hillerman's portrayal of Watson.

Nigel Bruce for me, even though he's portrayed as a moron in the films, a bumbling idiot. But it works.

It's his quintessential English-Ness I love, calling Holmes old man, old boy etc, with the odd "I say" thrown in.

Bruce and Hardwicke - Bruce was the first Watson I saw onscreen and I thought he was great. It was only later when I started reading the books that I realised he was nothing like the literary character. Hardwicke just seemed to have a bit more of a personality than David Burke so I went for his incarnation from the Brett series.

All joking aside, a nice distribution of votes on this death match so far. Clearly the actors doing the Watson role were relatively well chosen sorts.

Edward Hardwicke by a mile.
My second vote went to Kenneth Welsh. Why? Well, he's got a great surname and he was also Windom Earle in Twin Peaks. So even though I've not seen him as Watson, he's a pretty fine actor.

Strangely enough, the Basil Rathbone 'Hound of the Baskervilles' was on TV yesterday and I was thinking, as I was watching Nigel Bruce, 'what a silly old duffer!'. So, it's fair to say that he didn't get my vote. It's funny, before the Granada TV series, we all (generalising a bit there) accepted that Watson was a bit of a fool. David Burke changed all that, for me anyway, which is why I have voted for him and his successor (who, incidentally, I went to see in the stage play 'The Secret of Sherlock Holmes' in 1989/1990). I'll also admit to a bit of tactical voting - I was just going to vote for one and didn't want to see David Burke tied in 3rd place with Martin Freeman (who I have zero respect for). So Burke and Hardwicke it is...

Some interesting info, re - Nigel Bruce, Edward Hardwicke and Edward's father. Edward Hardwicke's father, was the stage and film Actor, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, who moved to the USA, in the late 1930's, in Hollywood, Sir Cedric, became close friends with Nigel Bruce (who was an old friend from Cedric's, London days), Edward Hardwicke, remembered Nigel Bruce, coming to the Hardwicke home, and playing bridge, with his father, also among Sir Cedric's friends, in Hollywood, was Basil Rathbone. Edward, returned to England, but his father, later moved to the USA, permanently. Sir Cedric Hardwicke, played Sherlock Holmes, on the Radio, in 1945 - fourthgarrideb.com/2015/07/the-speckled-band-BBC-radio-1945/

Good information Billy. Rathbone and Bruce were already friends before doing the Holmes film. There is a Hollywood legend that Darryl Zanuck, head of 20th Century Fox at the time, saw Basil and Nigel talking to each other at a party and remarked, "There's Sherlock Holmes and Watson." and that's how they came to be cast. Not true but it's a good story.

I'm not complaining but I am a bit surprised Nigel Bruce has received the most votes so far.
