The Proclaimers - possibly the most famous people ever to come from Auchtermuchty. However, what is your favourite hit of theirs to make the UK top 50? Pick TWO! Letter From America
I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)
Sunshine on Leith
I'm On My Way
King Of The Road
Let's Get Married
What Makes You Cry?

I've always loved the Proclaimers, not least because 'Cap in Hand' features one of the few cultural references to the football team I supported from about age 8 onwards...
I can understand why Stranraer lie so lowly They could save a lot of points by signing Hibs Goalie
It is something of a mystery how I came to support Stranraer given that I was born 380 miles from Stair Park but I suppose there are plenty of people who support Real Madrid who live in Motherwell. Maybe I just lacked ambition.
I have fond memories of going with my parents to watch Stranraer lose 4-0 in the Scottish League Cup to Hibs at Easter Road in August 1988 while we were on holiday. Steve Archibald was playing for Hibs at the time and scored a couple of the goals. Later that season we lost 8-0 to Rangers at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup. As Terry McCann once said "He may be in the gutter but he's looking at the drains".
Anyway, to get back to the serious business, I voted for Letter from America and Sunshine on Leith although I could have voted for any of them really.

I'm not so much of a fan.. They are okay.
I have to say I don't like their version of King of the Road. Awful in comparison to Deano's.
Is this all they ever did? I cannot see any other songs winning this but the top two.
Sunshine I didn't like.. I'm gonna have to deliberate on this.

Incidentally, 'Proclaimers: This is the Story' is currently (as I write this) on BBC iPlayer to download on CatchUp TV in the UK.

Loved their first album, pretty average from that point onwards IMO. I detest 500 Miles with a passion, more to do with being the Scotland song and being over played and Sunshine on Leith is the Hibs anthem, so they can shove that one where the sun don't shine, which is Leith usually!! The programme is well worth a watch. Come across as two decent guys and love their football which always earns respect in my eyes.

Good performers. Very catchy songs and in it for the music, not the adulation it brings. Honest pair of lads.

I'm Surprised they haven't had more hits than that.
Don't know the last two but What Makes You Cry is brilliant,so that one plus, and this is a tough one to decide,500 miles.
I,ve always meant to check out more of their stuff.I have a couple of their lps but never really played them.

I watched the BBC4 documentary and they come across as good, well-grounded guys. Knowledgeable about music in general, and their own music and why it might be successful. I well remember their first hit. It was on IIRC TOTP - then a few days later I heard it on a pub jukebox - it hit me that it was quite a song, very honest and traditional amongst the gloss of the time. I think 'Letter From America' and 'Pump Up The Volume' must have been the two outstanding songs of the period What has always struck me about them, is the wholehearted passion and conviction they show when performing their songs, in tandem with their native accent. I think this has endeared the passive fan to them. They have emerged into the public consciousness only intermittently, however many artists are like this (the Bee Gees being a prime example), so this should not be held against them.

I do like a bit of the proclaimers, the Dexter Fletcher film Sunshine on Leith is really good, with all their hits.
I am going to go for: Lets get married 500 Miles

Thanks for the reminder. I completely forgot this as I was forced to attend a colleague's leaving do on Wednesday night and completely forgot to record it on BBC2 Scotland.

500 miles has done them no harm at all. Voted for that and would have done Letter from America but I really like their cover of King of the Road so that is my second choice.

Singing songs like 'King of the Road' in a fake, Scottish, Proclaimer accent sounds like the kind of novelty act that would be entertaining people at an old folks home.. And therefore I merely enquired if jno was a singer in an 'Over 60s' band.
I can't imagine a younger (say, under 60s) crowd really 'appreciating'* it. Not without getting to boo and throw objects at the band at any rate.
Even The Proclaimers would probably think it uncool and that really tells you something. I mean Jeez what does jno's band do for an encore, 'Can't Smile Without You' by Barry Manilow?

My daughter thought they were a one-hit wonder with '500 miles'. Strange how different people perceive a certain band or group. Very good songs by an underrated act. A friend of mine once said I looked like one of the Proclaimers. I retorted, "how can I look like one of them when they are identical twins". He would have trouble winding up a cuckoo clock.

What's more regnant is the fact '500 miles' is only Proclaimers record I have and the radio generally don't play the others.

Agreed, it's either '500 Miles' or 'Letter To America' that gets aired.

Sunshine on Leith as you have never heard it before and let me assure you despite the fairly dodgy sound quality, I heard them sing this at Hampden back in April and it really does makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

Errr...erm... no, doesn't 'do it' for me. It is hindered, though, by all the distortion on the recording.

I watched the film 'Sunshine on Leith' yesterday which is a musical based solely on Proclaimers songs. I have to say I actually enjoyed it! Good stuff and nice to see them making a cameo. It's over and done with, it's over and done with... great tune.
