First released in 1973, these two albums are arguably the best of The Beatles in two compilations - both fantastic albums with hits coming at you thick and fast. But, if you could only choose ONE (or ONE) of them, which would it be? Here's the tracks... No fence sitting, you have to choose one or the other.

I would have sat on the fence if you hadn't insisted They are both great. But because music, in terms of songwriting and recording techniques, advanced quickly in the later 60s, I have chosen the latter album.

I went for the RED album as I like nearly every single track on it. The Beatles did the right thing by changing musical direction and experimenting but there are fewer tracks I like on the BLUE album as I'm more fond of their 'beat group' era than their 'drippy hippy' era.

I might have to abstain I still find it astonishing when you see the tracks listed like that just how good they were. Some of the consistency might have tailed off in the final couple of years but they still produced stone cold classics that will still be played in 50 years time.

It's red album for me, the early 60s sound plus the majority of my Beatles favourites are on there: Day Tripper, Drive My Car, I Feel Fine, We Can Work It Out, Paperback Writer. I like every track on the red one, but there are very small number on the blue one I'd happily skip through: 'Ballad of John and Yoko' and 'Come Together' top of that list.

Blue for me. I very very nearly brought this at a Record Fair, (remember them?) on blue vinyl in around 1983, it was going for £40 which was a fortune back then. I blinked first and missed out. Turns out I did well, you can get this now for around £30-45 on eBay. If you can be @rsed!

Red sneaks it for me as my favourite Beatles track is 'Ticket to Ride' and also for the youthful exuberance their music and sound had in the first half of their career. Whilst the music in the second half of their career was superb, they had lost a bit of their charm collectively as a group, which was inevitable with the success they had.
Two great albums which should be in (nearly) every music fans collection.

Spot on there, Daz - but if I had to choose, I'd go for Blue. I've always been fascinated by their recording process and thus favour the later, more experimental tracks. A couple of tracks on Red I can skip, namely Michelle and Girl, but on Blue there's only Old Brown Shoe. Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and the peerless A Day In The Life clinch it for me.
The story behind the recording of Strawberry Fields is particularly interesting in that it's actually two recordings stitched together. After John's acoustic demo (sadly not recorded) for George Martin they set about recording the song but were never happy with a complete take having tried it in different keys and at different speeds. GM questioned John as to what he was trying to achieve and he said that he liked the start of one take but the end of another so could he (GM) join them up? GM explained that it was almost impossible because of the differences but Lennon just said words to the effect of, "I'm sure you'll figure it out." So, Martin slowed down the later take and amazingly found that it matched the earlier one exactly. The join can be heard about one minute into the track, at the start of one of the 'Let me take you down' lines.

Red at a push for me. Though I agree with Felix about those two tracks. You think what was was missed out, I ShouldvHavw Known Better, If I Fell, You're going To Lose That Girl plus any from Rubber Soul and Revolver. I also agree with jno that Ballad Of John And Yoko snd Come Together are weak links there. It should be a crime to have one without the other.

I voted Blue. I do like many Red tracks though.
I find: Blue is better to spaz out to. Red is better to dance about to.
Octopus's Garden swung it for me.

I didn't used to like 'Come Together', but it has grown on me.
'Old Brown Shoe' is a bit neither here nor there.

Blue for me, whilst they are all classics, I have more memories and enjoyment associated with the track on blue.

Very hard question. I like every track on both but on the basis that I bought the Red album on cassette when I was at school and listened to it over and over again until it broke it has to be Red.

Heres one regarding The Ballad of John and Yoko.
Who played drums and who played lead guitar on the track? It WASNT Ringo or Gorgeous George. No Googling

Lennon on lead with Macca on drums. Lennon wrote it on holiday and was eager to put it down straight away when he got back, so much so that he didn't want to wait for the other two to get back.

Well done Felix. The other two DO appear by name, John: "Play faster Ringo" Paul: "okay George"

The Blue album but this is another case were there is no wrong answer. I got both one year for Christmas back in the '70s and played them constantly. I still amazed I didn't wear them out.

Blue just edges it - despite the brilliance of "The White Album" & Sgt Peppers,Help is my favourite studio album though & that belongs on the Red compilation
