Online car sales to accelerate, as salesmen take a back seatSmall 'Minder' mention on here: www.BBC.com/news/business-38769896So, would you rather buy a car online or from a salesperson?

From a salesman definitely. From an official dealer too is my preferred choice.

I avoid official dealers at all costs. Internet is my preferred option, done it with the last 3 and had no problems.

Passed my driving test last week. Yes, I was going to ask for help in buying my first car, as I know nothing about them. Motorbikes yes, I have a working knowledge of them but cars no. So I asked him and he said he was the worst person to ask, based on some of his cars. I'll let you know my findings soon TBC...

I've always bought my cars privately (out of the local paper) or from a dealers' salesman until the one I've got at the moment. I did find it online but looked at it and had it checked out before I bought it.
I wouldn't buy a car 'blind' from the internet.

I probably wouldn't buy a car blind and usually prefer a dealer. Is the haggle factor there with an internet buy? That said, service and MOT from dealers is always top dollar and a bit too textbook sometimes I feel - they follow a so-called standard but might not necessarily go the extra mile like a car enthusiast or local mechanic might. I'm in the weird situation having one British motor and one Austrian one. This allows me to compare costs like for like. Interestingly second hand cars don't depreciate so quickly in Austria as much as they do in the UK and second hand motors in blighty seem to be much cheaper. Newer cars can often work out cheaper locally though, but if the pound continues to nosedive a British car might work out a right bargain and I'll be buying British (solely based on price and not for patriotic reasons and love for the UK VAT man). As for insurance, the UK is dirt cheap compared to where I am but it can be hard to find UK insurers ok about long term driving "on the continent". Most Austrians will fork out 1 month's wages just on car insurance. Go further east and insurance is even cheaper - I know a Bulgarian driving around here on fully compo for 100 Euro a year! Well done brother Stanton on passing your test. You'll probably get a good deal on an old hearse.

Well done brother Stanton on passing your test. You'll probably get a good deal on an old hearse. I live not far from redneck Cornwall though, so maybe a pick-up would look more fitting. I could get a couple of hot chicks in little black St Piran flag crop tops, wearing hot pants, to sit out the back holding cattle prods... Having said that, a hearse would be kinda cool. Get myself a wife that looks like Yvonne De Carlo and change my name to Herman....... Nah, Herman Stanton would never work.. It sounds a bit far fetched.

I bought my second car from an online advert. It wasn't sight unseen as I went and checked it out and drove it before haggling over the price. There is a lot of mark up at caryards (well just think about Arthur !) so as long as you've researched market prices for the model you want and can have it checked by a mechanic, that is my preferred way.

I just been to look at a car from a dealership and I took my own 2 personal mechanics.. Tonks & Son! Good job I did, there was something wrong with the bumper - it's looser than it should be due to a bump, no serious damage but plastic fixings are snapped! I never noticed it but Tonks's son spotted it straight away. Just saved me some money, I told the man to fix the bumper or it was a no sale. He said he'd see what he could do and that I should come back Saturday.
Buying cars is well dodgy. Such a lottery.

I had a list of things to check off when I bought my second car in 2015. I was determined to actually get through the list rather than do what i usually do of oohing and aahing over the features that I like. My list includes checking the colour of exhaust smoke, the oil, drive it then look underneath for leaks, getting down and eying along the side panels to see if they are straight or reveal misalignment, open and close every door and window (you'd be surprised how annoying it is to discover your back windows won't wind down), taking the matting out of the boot (as you don't want to discover a rusted wheel well under the spare), looking for telltale rust along rear quarter panels, scuttle, roof rim, wheel arches etc., driving it of course too. Lol You are probably looking for a car that is younger than my 1973 model. Good luck with your search for a car Arch Stanton.

From a dealership if it's a lot of£££'s. I'd happily buy privately,if it felt genuine or preferably,if I knew the person - like a friend or colleague

Sold my mum's smart car last night, advertised on auto trader and sold in 2 days. If I'd tried to trade it in, I'd still be stuck with it unless I was prepared to get mugged off.

Yes,must say - trade in values are often an absolute p1ss take! My Dad left VW back in 2006 after nearly 40 years. The crappy servicing & warranty work was one thing, the absolute disgrace of a trade in value on a low mileage, top of the range car, with even more options & perfect condition was another! He walked out & got offered a grand more at another garage!......

Depends....new cars online are ok, but never used ones (which I normally buy)
I try to get as much warranty as possible, which only works at dealers.
