Which is your favourite ITC action-type show first broadcast in the UK in the 1970s?
Pick two!
The Adventurer
Department S
Jason King
The Persuaders!
The Protectors
Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)
Space: 1999
Strange Report
Return of The Saint
UFO
The Zoo Gang

Tough, very tough. Some great shows there, and The Adventurer. Department S was my first choice and then it was close between R&H and UFO with the latter just edging it.

No recollection of the Strange Report at all although it looks great, one I would really like to see, even if 'Kaz Garas as Gynt' does look like a bad hand at Scrabble. I voted for Randall and Hopkirk because I've always liked it and the Persuaders for the theme tune.

Some great shows there, and The Adventurer. Far too much much Gene-ism round these here parts. He was only trying his best, love 'im and in his best golfing troos at that. No recollection of the Strange Report at all although it looks great, one I would really like to see, even if 'Kaz Garas as Gynt' does look like a bad hand at Scrabble. Fair play, this made me laugh gustav. I wonder if I could reverse it and at least find something positive about Gene Barry i.e. Actor? Ooh he' dreadful, but at least he'd give you 20 points if his name went over a double word score! 'Strange Report' is quite good I think and as it happens I like Kaz Garas too. If I remember correctly, he often shows up on 70s cop shows as some sort of pyscho killer or bit part and has a very good screen presence. 'Strange Report' is a bit like a 1960s version of CSI (Las Vegas) but a lot groovier all set in London. Strange is simply the main character's surname and is not a term that should put you off watching it as it pretty good. What is strange about Strange is the fact he drives an old taxi - great for the odd story (in a Callan sort of way). It has about 10% less action than your average ITC series but it's definitely worth a punt. For me it's 'Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased)' followed by 'Return of The Saint'. R&H only just creeps into the 1970s and for me this is very much a 60s show I feel in terms of TV vibe. ROTS is major 70s vibe though - love it. If there were a third place, likely 'Department S' and then 'Space: 1999'. Even though UFO and Space 1999 are both futuristic, Space 1999 definitely has the more 70s vibe about it for me, particularly promoted by Barry Morse's sideboards. Then we have Catherine Schell vs Gabrielle Drake - oh my good gawd, what a death match that is. 'The Zoo Gang' lower down the ranking, albeit a good watch and undoubtedly The Gene Machine and his iron girth are propping it all up in the relegation zone.

I voted on Space 1999 for the later series that featured Catherine Schell. The first series wasn't brilliant.

R&H(D) came third for me too, but then again I was copying Maninasuitcase apparently. In all fairness though, I don't think I've seen The Protectors, The Zoo Gang or Strange Report. So my opinions are questionable at best in this particular deathmatch.

In the spirit of early 70s shows with Barry Morse in them, and the fact I've been in Hardcastle & McCormick mode for the last year since this forum went into overdrive, I think I need to revisit 'The Zoo Gang' and give it the full review treatment on a dedicated thread here real soon.

Yes but there's only so many hours in a day and right now my viewing/reading schedule is too busy to entertain the idea.

I haven't seen any of them and only have heard of a few. No vote this week. Gene Barry in 'The Adventurer' was also filmed in your neck of the woods too Karin, albeit intertwined with scene from Pinewood or somewhere else in the UK. Meanwhile UFO storms ahead!

The Persuaders and U.F.O.
Honorary mentions for Department S, Strange Report, Return Of The Saint and even Jason King (which had its moments).
Strange Report was under-rated in the wider scheme of things. It had a likeable cast, good scripts and was not cheap filler like 'The Adventurer'.

Space 1999 and UFO for me... if you can, check out the restored Blu-Ray Space 1999, especially the first series. It might have dated, but it still stands up well against the CGI world we live in today...

I voted for Jason King and UFO.
I always watch Jason King to cheer me up.
Admittedly I have not watched several of the shows - such as The Persuaders which I must watch soon.

I never understood the appeal of UFO. It just seems so boring to me. No action for a sci fi show and a lot of dialogue that seemed so serious in tone, there was just no time for fun or excitement. Also, the women seemed to be only eye candy, with no strong characters.

No but it does say 'soon' plus Andrew Pixley is doing the viewing notes so if it wasn't a no brainer before, it is now. Plus there's mention of Invasion UFO meaning the compilation film might also be included. All good as far as I'm concerned.

I've got the Carlton sets which at the time looked stunning in terms of picture quality, but now look a little tired as we've been spoilt in recent years with vintage TV on BD.

UFO - the theme tune is the dogs, fair play. Great to see it is leading the vote too.

Also, the women seemed to be only eye candy, with no strong characters. Interesting points. The dialogue actually was serious - the show didn't really have a 'fun' element like 'The Persuaders' or 'Jason King'. Gabrielle Drake was competent, though she and some of the other girls like Ayshea Brough undoubtedly had a huge element of eye candy. Though I think that on occasion Wanda Ventham and Dolores Mantez showed some mettle.

P.S. If 'U.F.O.' was a new series now, would Gabriella Drake and Ayshea Brough be 'wannabees'....? ....and Wanda Ventham & Dolores Mantez be 'MILFs'....?
