Addams all day long. Fantastic cast. Did you know Lurch (Ted Cassidy) played TWO parts? Thing (the hand) was Cassidy. Best kick in the balls on film? Butch Cassidy (Rules? In a knife fight?) Gives to his namesake, Ted Cassidy.

I am 100% MUNSTERS!!!!!!!!! I have the original 2 seasons on DVD plus the 1966 MUNSTER GO HOME! movie and the 1981 MUNSTERS REVENGE t.v movie (all on region 1) I also have ex -rental VHS copies of HERE COME THE MUNSTERS form 1995 and MUNSTERS SCARY LITTLE Christmas from 1996, plus a few munster action figures and a couple of comics.
THE MUNSTERS actually achieved higher figures in the Nielsen ratings then THE ADDAMS FAMILY and both programmes were cancelled in the same week, after ratings dropped to a low due to the premiere of ABC's Batman, which was in colour.
The irony was, the bloke who designed the munsters cars, also designed the bat mobile!

I liked them both, but The Munsters was by far the superior IMO.

That’s another great one! Thanks to mrschisholm. I really thought that the Addams Family was done later and was quite surprised now that they were released at the same time. You live and learn. I grew up with the Munsters and remember that I wondered where the people were who laughed all the time during the scenes. After all it wasn’t a stage play, so... Definitely my first encounter with this sort of thing (whatever it is called in English). It was aired in original with subtitels here, and I didn’t care that my sister hid them with a cushion once. Obviously to practise her English. I didn’t understand a word but found it funny anyway. The pilot for the series was in colour. Looks strange and it really works better in b/w. The Addams Family is funny, too. I always loved Thing and Lurch. And Cousin Itt! The phrase “You rang?” turned up as often as “Goody, goody, goody” in our household, but all in all it never charmed me like the Munsters. So it’s the Munsters for me.

Yes, the 15 minute colour pilot is weird! There is a pheobe munster instead of lilly and eddie is played by another actor!
Just remembered I also have a china herman and grandpa salt and pepper shaker set, which prouldy sat in on the mantle piece in my caravan.
A former er indoors bought me a munsters living room model kit, but I sold it years later in ebay, as I knew my painting skills could not do it justice.

I'm sitting on the fence this week and not voting as this is too tough for me. I don't think that fancying a young Yvonne De Carlo (mein Gott, she was stunning) is a good reason to vote for The Munsters as in fairness I had a bit of a thing for Carolyn Jones as Morticia Addams too as a youngster. So for me, it's splinters on jacksie time (undecided). Meanwhile let's all look at a picture of Yvonne De Carlo because we can:

Is that a young Arch Stanton on the far left of the picture? I noticed he's been keeping stumm on this thread.

No, but I do have a pet dragon called Spot that I keep under the stairs at Stanton Hall, it's good for disposing of canvassing politicians... Anyhoo, I'm certainly finding this death match a really tough one! I'm on the same wavelength as MIAS. I really liked The Munsters when I was younger (albeit not in the 60s! ) but I have a feeling that The Addams family was a classier production and just pips it.. I haven't seen either in many years, so it's difficult to say. I'm kind of sitting on the fence at this point.. The Munsters had the better theme tune by far! Out of the two I'd be more inclined to revisit The Munsters I think... Hmmm decisions, decisions..

Yvonne De Carlo looks stunning in that pic. Old Hollywood really marketed their stars well. These days the 'stars' themselves post selfies of themselves every day. I voted for The Addams Family but both great shows. The attention to detail in these shows was impressive. I liked the clicking of fingers thing. Great topic btw Mrs Chisholm.

Here in America this question really divides people. It's almost like there's a law that says you can only like one of them. I've always liked both and there are enough differences between the two shows to make that easy. I do prefer The Addams Family a bit more. One thing I've always liked about Tha Addams Family is that the cast seems like they had a great time making the show. I think that comes across in their performances.

Watching re-runs of 'The Addams Family' I was struck by the humour. Like more recent shows e.g. 'The Simpsons' it works on several levels for several age groups, both scripted and visually.

After speaking about this with the Wife, she reminded me when I worked as a poor baker and 'The Addams Family' was made into a film, I got a copy of it on a dodgy video from a guy at work, but it wasn't the Hollywood version which I had obtained, it was a very well done p0rn film. I spent a night or three on the sofa after that

I liked them both, but The Munsters was by far the superior IMO. 100% agree. Fred Gwynne, Al Lewis, and Yvonne Decarlo I thought gave much better performances than John Astin and Carolyn Jones. I didn't like the Addams Family at all. The Munsters had better ratings when both shows aired, and it has played in syndication here in the US over the years, a lot more than the Addams Family has. Through most of the 70's, the Munsters aired daily on my local TV stations, and The Addams Family was nowhere to be found.

This is a tough one, I have all episodes of both, in my teens I leaned more towards the Addams Family, but past few years, have watched quite a lot of Munsters with my daughter and probably find that more funny now. Still amazes me both got cancelled when they had so much more to give. You'd always expect an episode of Addams family to be stuck on BBC if the Tennis ended early (Wimbledon etc) back in the 90s, but you never see them on TV these days at all.
