What is the best magical car in a family/children's film? Herbie or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?

Christine! Herbie was better than Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. CCBB had too much singing in it and a dodgy name. Admittedly it could fly and I had the toy car of it (hand me down!), where the wings snapped out, but it looked a bit pez. I saw Herbie Goes Bananas when it first came out on VHS in 1982?! I was dying to watch this as no one would take me to the pictures to watch it! I thought it was pretty good despite it's reputation. I've never seen it since. I can't remember the last time I saw Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo either. The Love Bug and Herbie Rides Again, I've seen probably in the last decade though. I've not seen either reboot.

I HATED Herbie, just HATED him, which is odd as I queued to see him at Disneyland in 1989. My favourite childhood film is Chitty. I STILL watch it EVERY TIME it's on TV, although I HATE the songs Hushaby Mountain and Truly Scrumptious. When I grow up, I want to be like the eccentric grandfather.

My favourite children's film is Ring of Bright Water. I watch that at least once a year!! I like the scenery and message. Shame it didn't have a highland pub scene. To juxtapose against the earlier London scenes.

I adore this film, but always avoid the death of Mij, it's heartbreaking.

I adore this film, but always avoid the death of Mij, it's heartbreaking. Yeah but Mij's offspring (probably) live on... It's got a happy ending. Sort of.. Top, top movie.

The Love Bug was broadcast over the summer. I watched some of it to see if it was as good as I thought it was when I was a kid. It was pretty good for a late 60s Disney live action film. But as a piece of cinema I think Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will always have the edge. There's rather more in that to stand the test of time. I have got a matchbox Herbie and the (Corgi?) CCBB. The last one might be worth something if I still had the box.

I am biased - loved Herbie as my late granny took me to the cinema, think it was to see Herbie Goes Bananas in 1980. Chitty is a non starter for me. I can't stand DVD (Dick Van Dyke) so am not voting for him on principle. His worst performance was as 'Malduke' in series 4 of Airwolf.
Apparently there was also a short lived Herbie TV series in 1982. I wouldn't touch new Herbie though.

Gotta go with the VW Bug. My mom always had one when I was a kid and I have two clear memories of it: 1) lying in the back seat and staring up at the tiny black dots on the interior ceiling, and 2) the time she got really mad at me because I stuck stickers from the 1975 Topps Good Times trading card series on the dashboard and they wouldn't come off.

Without any doubt CCBB. I've sat inside one of the original CCBB - they have it displayed at Brooklands Museum.
true the songs are a bit nauseating but the characters are gems: Grandpa (Lionel Jefferys) "I'm off to India to have some tea with the Maharaja". Priceless.
Benny Hill as the eccentric toy maker. And who could miss out Stanley Unwin, Desmond Llewelyn, James Robertson Justice, Babs Windsor... not an American in sight... apart from Dicky boy.

I wouldn't touch new Herbie though. Especially if it has a diesel engine.

I usually shout out "herbie" when I'm cooking dinner. I hereby announce that this one does not qualify for this week's "Boom Boom Tish" award. That said, Herbie has gone bananas in this vote - and he's yellow!

I like both Herbie and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, but Herbie, just edges it for me, The Love Bug (1969) and Herbie Rides Again (1974), were the best Herbie films, and I have got them both on DVD, I do like the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), but have never been keen on the part of the film, where Caractacus Potts (Dick Van Dyke), Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes), Jeremy (Adrian Hall) and Jemima (Heather Ripley), go to the land of Vulgaria.

Very hard one this, I love both, the Herbie films have all been on the past 2 Christmas's so I've made sure the kids have watched them (despite owning the box set....which we've not actually opened yet, haha), but Chitty was another fav of mine as a kid and again one I have on DVD and force the kids to watch. I just can't choose between them so sitting on the fence.

I like that part of the film overall - but as you suggest it is unusually off-beat, if not sinister, for a family film. That was a trait of the time, e.g. 'Willie Wonka & The Chocolate Factory' (1971) from the same period was similar. They were not gratuitous, but I don't think the subject matter would be dealt with like that today. E.g. children banned/hidden from society, those with disabilities being holed-up as (slave-type) workers in a secret factory.

Before I even read what the poll is exactly about (and I still don't care ) my choice was clear. I can't remember any of the Herbie films, there's just a vast memory of some scenes. I can still remember where I had been when I saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for the first time. Catching tune. *humming mmmh mmmh m-m-m-m-m-mmh...* But I have owned two Beetles so there's no way I can choose the other one.
