We all argued over the car in our house, god knows why. Just because it was a car and I have two brothers. So the car for me. Great subject Karinb!!!

Indeed. I agree Tomo. I have to say that half those pieces must either be completely new, or my set was missing a few! Sack of money? Cat? I know I'm gonna be on 'me bill' here, but I've always been drawn to the top hat, or the dog. The dog always provided much amusement, because you could have a good snicker when pretending to urinate on fellow players, if you landed on their squares - Which livened up the proceedings no end for a child (I'd probably still do it now if I'm honest! )! The reasons for The Top Hat slightly different.. I remember we used to make up our own rules (being from deepest darkest Lancashire, children were seldom taught to read then!), whereby dependent on what counter you picked you got certain freebies. Like not having to pay to claim a certain property as yours, provided you landed on it... Or if owned by another player, not having to pay rent etc. The ship was Fleet St etc, and to cut a long story short, the Hat was reminiscent of a Victorian Top Hat ala Jack The Ripper, and so you got Whitechapel. Which admittedly was a rubbish property, but as a kid I quite liked the idea of sneaking around as Jack The Ripper, terrorising my fellow players.. Weird but true! So I'm going Top Hat!!!!!!

I voted for the racing car as the coolest. If I couldn't have the racing car when I played Monopoly I liked to be the ship, top hat, dog or shoe. I never wanted to be the thimble or iron. My family used to live just off the Old Kent Road when I was a child. It's appropriate that it's the cheapest property on the board as it's a cheap, run-down, depressing area.

I never wanted to be the thimble or iron. Good lad! As far as those items are concerned there's just too many connections to women's work.... Best to start your distancing yourself from these at a very early age I find.

Best to start your distancing yourself from these at a very early age I find. I hope you've done the ironing and some mending Arch Stanton before logging on to the forum. Actually I don't think people mend anymore. They just buy new. I had to comment on 'women's work'. I liked the dog as my favourite piece. The battleship and car were always popular too. If you were the youngest player, there'd be no chance of getting the piece you wanted. People always seemed to develop their own rules for the game (house rules) and other times someone would grab the rules to end an argument. One game could really go on for ages, hours so you'd have to leave the board set up to return to it. Count your money and keep an eye on the properties.

Karin - Arch is legend with his iron, flattening out them bank notes OCD style to make 'em nice'n'crispy in order to pay his manservants in Stanton Hall. Agree mending is old school. That said I have a 1.3 Ghz PC with 1Gb RAM I bought in 2000 which I intend to keep running as long as possible in the interests of anorakdom. Currently running Puppy Linux Slacko 5.6 and I have to say it goes like a dream, 15 years on! Arch, please iron the patches on my sleeves!

Very interesting link here, thanks for that jno. I will vote for the battleship although I think I always got the shoe for some reason.
