Both Rotten & Strummer fronted two big bands with some great tunes but who was the definitive 70s punk icon frontman?

Lydon by some distance for me - never really saw the appeal of Strummer, either as a song writer or frontman.

I would say Lydon/Rotten. For me The Clash weren't really a punk band, just a great band who came along at the same time and got caught up in it. The Pistols epitomise punk, they were a bunch of lads who could hardly play, who put a band together and managed to make an iconic album whilst annoying the establishment big time, before it all fell apart.
Thats my opinion of it anyway, but I was too young to live it first hand.

When anyone mentions punk rock everyone thinks of Rotten, hence the reason why I voted for the buttery toad. But in terms of pure musical ability Strummer has it all day long.

Johnny Rotten was the face of the Sex Pistols (though I think Steve Jones was the driving force) and for me, the Sex Pistols were Punk Rock

I always thought and was led to believe; Strummer was mostly the lyricist, whereas Jones was the musical talent/writer/arranger. |

Which was why Mclaren sacked him - he 'wanted to be like The Beatles' is I think the quote. There wasn't much/any output (of note) after Matlock got the tin-tack. I think Sid Viscious signed his own Death Warrant when he joined the Sex Pistols allthough I love Johnny B Goode/Roadrunner - brilliant...

Although Lydon was okayish I found that he ended up a sort of Freddy Krueger in the latter movies and became a bit obvious when it became to being interviewed and seemed set up a lot of times to get the right reaction from him.
Aside note I did feel quite sad that they made a Pistols tv without him being involved at all BUT more importantly the passing of his wife and the way she passed away.😒

As time goes on, I feel The Pistols were a bit over rated, where as The Clash were not. PIL were brilliant though, I find Rotten polarising, and Strummer was a more balanced person, so changed my vote after many years of the original vote! |

Joe Strummer, I had "Rope" and "London Calling" back in the day. I felt the Sex Pistols were a bit extreme.
Mind you John Lydon is onto it with regards to the state of Britain today.

I know the latter might not be a fashionable opinion but I still think it's true. To me, it just wasn't music and I always thought Rotten/Lydon hammed it up too much. He never really impressed me.
ps. Of all the bands from that era/genre, I liked Buzzcocks most.

When you think about it, the Sex Pistols along with others like the Stone Roses and the Arctic Monkeys, are credited with changing whole musical scenes.
The responsibility for this is put entirely on their shoulders, yet they were part of the wider thing that was going on, and their potent chart careers were relatively short.
This is not to detract from the good music that they did, it is just that they are often portrayed as the one and only act responsible for a movement in the musical landscape.
