Actor Michael Jayston has died aged 88. He was the Valeyard in the 1986 Colin Baker Dr Who epic The Trial of a Timelord.
Also, the original (and best) Peter Guilliam, in the BBC TV Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in 1979.
Vale, Valeyard.
Obscure one this but he provided the vocal interludes on Saint Etienne's 2002 album Finisterre.

Was great in the trial of a time lord, also featured in a great episode of tales of the unexpected, probably most famous role was that in Only fools and horses or Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy but was in a huge amount of work on stage tv and radio his distinctive voice made him a great radio actor. RIP

Sad news, fine actor with an illustrious career under his belt RIP Sir Yes, he was in so much stuff. So much good stuff. Particularly in the 60s/70s. I think my favourite is The Homecoming. RIP Mr Jayston.

This is sad news. Michael Jayston was a brilliant actor with a distinctive voice. He was great in Dr Who Trial of a Timelord as a the chilling Valeyard. He was also great in the Tales of the Unexpected episode The Best Chess player in the World and the classic horror film Tales that Witness Madness alongside Joan Collins. Michael Jayston RIP.

I first saw him (when I was a kid) in 'A Bit Of A Do' (1989) where he played a widower Neville Badger who was a solicitor (with Badger, Badger Fox & Badger) who was a very mild mannered and polite man who struggled with small talk at social events and consistently spoke about his deceased wife Jane and was forever apologising and saying "good lord". For fans of Michael you really need to see his performance in this. He starred in both series and leading the cast was David Jason, he would go on to star with David in both 'Only Fools & Horses' and 'The Darling Buds Of May'.
RIP

I only got to meet him for a couple of seconds, It was funny feeling sitting next to a bloke who had been on doctor who, played James bond and worked with both George cole and Christopher Lambert. I never got a chance to ask him about filming the episode if quiller with George cole,as you say with the actors, posed for a picture then made way for the next punter!

Saw him at many events and he always seemed a lovely bloke with a ready wit. Last saw him last summer at the Day at Devil's End event, where he joined Michael Troughton and Jeff Rawle by the Aldbourne pond for a little chat for the benefit of the punters.
I'm going to be a bit unpredictable here and say that my fave Jayston performance was in The Power Game. And well done to him for bringing a degree of respectability to one of the worst Doctor Who seasons ever made.
Terrific actor. Sad that he's left the stage.
RIP.

He also performed a fantastic audio-reading of Geoffrey Household's novel 'Rogue Male', which periodically gets an airing on Radio 4 Extra. He had a mesmerising voice and I never tire of listening to that performance whenever they broadcast it.
RIP

He'd have been good in the 1976 film I think. Peter O'Toole is fine, and I appreciate the producers probably needed a name in the lead, but Michael Jayston just had that intensity about him that would have suited the character down to the ground.
