Think he was the last of Dads Army left, as private Pike he was a comedy character still well known today, had a role in a later Carry On and was often a guest actor on tv through the seventies to nineties, I think his last tv acting role was on Eastenders. Rip

Rip He had a cameo in the 2016 dads army movie. I know that was not telly though

More sad news. He'll be remembered for many years to come along with the rest of the Dad's Army cast.
RIP Ian.

St Peter: "Your name will be required to enter here. What is it?" Captain Mainwaring (from beyond the Pearly Gates): "Don't tell him , Pike!"
RIP Ian Lavender

Very sad to hear. Was pleased to discover recently that like me he was a big Buster Keaton fan, and he recorded a short documentary for Keaton's 'Three Ages' UK Blu-ray release recently. Will be long remembered for his Dad's Army role, though I do feel it overshadowed his later career somewhat.
Also, well done to BBC4 who slotted in a Dad's Army episode at 7.30pm this evening in tribute to Ian. (The Deadly Attachment - could honestly have done with a less obvious choice but good on them for the gesture.)
RIP.

Appeared in plenty of other things but Dads Army was IL's heyday for me. In a documentary about the making of Dads Army, Lavender said how Arthur Lowe took a bit of a shine to him and gave hm the advice,
'Find something eyecatching to wear and stay close to me' - hence the scarf which Pike adorned and the 'stupid boy' references. Lowe referred to Ian offset as 'Lavender Blue'.
The last of a great cast, RIP.

I read that Pike's blue and purple scarf was actually a nod to Claret and Blue - Ian Lavender being a Brummie and a lifelong Aston Villa fan. Up the Villa !

Not many actors hit the jackpot at 22 years old with such an iconic role.
Even on TV in his later years, you still think of him as young Pike.
RIP

He was always Pike wasn't he? It must be a double edged sword to get such a prominent role in such a successful comedy when you are so young. You could never see him in anything in years to come without thinking 'There's Private Pike'. But he was an essential part of Dad's Army. Sad loss.

Remember seeing him in The Glums, does anyone else remember this? From 1979. It was big on radio long before that I think. It was shown here in Ireland, I was a pre teen at the time. Patricia Brake also starred (Fletch's daughter in Porridge) as Eth and Jimmy Edwards as Dad also. Written by Frank Muir and Dennis Norden. RIP Ian. The Glums - Wikipedia

Unlike most young actors in the late-60s/early-70s he couldn't follow the fashion for long hair, due to his 'Dads Army' role.
RIP Ian Lavender.

Rip He was the last regular member of the cast. The two next most regular, who are still with us are Michael Knowles, best known as Captain Ashworth (the silly ass officer) in It Ain't Half Hot Mum and the adaptor of the show (with Harold Snoad) for the radio series. The other one is Caroline Dowdeswell who played the bank clerk Janet King in the first series, but the character was dropped after that. They both did 5 episodes.
