Sad news of another true rugby legend passing away, the iconic and legendary full back JPR Williams, who played for his country from 1969 to 1981 and was on two successful British Lions Tours, and ‘declined’ a 3rd one.

I've never been a fan of rugby but J.P.R. Williams was a name that I kept hearing throughout my childhood, and it was clear that he was quite special. Sad to hear of his departure. RIP.

That's 3 1970s icons in a few days. David Soul, Beckenbauer and now JPR Williams. Not Welsh or a massive Rugby fan but he dashed across our screens when we were kids. Great look with the sideys etc. RIP JPR.

Ahh, another sad loss - RIP JPR. About 26 years ago, the Australian rugby team were on tour in Wales, and I went (from Kent, other side of London) to most games. When they played the Welsh Students at Bridgend, there was a guy chatting to others and he was instantly recognisable. Both traits of this particular game embodied him. He was probably the most famous Welsh student ever, and at the height of his powers as he went on to become a prominent surgeon but he was also Mr Bridgend, too. Their greatest ever player, imho. I patiently waited and spoke to him - no idea what it was about - I was simply in the presence of a hero of mine. But I remember he was great. And he was, too. He was a legend, and a hero of mine. RIP JPR

I heard a story many years ago that a guy unknowingly walked up from Penryn Train Station with him, he came off the train and asked him the directions. The guy was walking there himself to watch them against London Welsh , JPR then shook his hand and said “see you in the bar after” top bloke.

Met JPR in the early 80s at a Lords Taverners cricket match. Shook his hand which felt like a shovel to me but I had just met Arthur Negus who was sat next to him so some perspective may be required.
RIP JPR
