Sad news. I didn't know he was ill. Galvanised the country in 1996, gave us hope for the first time in a generation that we could actually win something. Not treated especially well by the FA IMO and should have been in the job much longer.
By all accounts he was a great club manager too; when he took over at Barcelona in the mid-80s it was a highly unusual move for a British coach. And he was very successful there before returning to lead Spurs to their FA Cup win in 1991.
His playing days were before my time but he played more than 500 times for Chelsea, QPR and Tottenham. RIP Terry and thanks for Euro 96

Would have comfortably fitted into an episode of Minder. El Tel.
Good manager, England probably should have won Euro 96, and it was a surprise that he only had a little over two years in the job. He also had to move that England team away from the style of play used in the Graham Taylor years, and had a strong Spurs side 88-91.

The posts above says it all. Really sad to hear of his passing. He was a 'proper football man' in every way, a man from the game's golden age. I'm not English but the Euro 96 team was exceptional, what a summer that was. All our tomorrows looked brighter then. He was a player's manager, and a great man manager. His handling of Paul Gascoigne in particular, and Gareth Southgate after the Euro 96 semi final is a testament to his humanity. The two finest English managers in the modern era, in my opinion, were himself and Brian Clough. The FA 'blazer brigade' treated them both in an off hand and shabby manner. Terry - Leon Griffiths chose the name well for his TV hero, even the name evokes someone good humoured, dependable, someone who will always back you up in every way. The world needs more people called Terry. We should all have a Terry in our lives. Let's raise a glass to Tel. RIP Terry.

Farewell to the co-creator of Hazell, which the TV obits are yet to mention (and I understand why, of course).
A real character who brought colour to football and with it great tactical nous. One of those people who always seemed perrennially young. It was almost as much of a shock to hear that he was 80 as it was that he had died. RIP.

Not only a great player and manager, but also a writer, and came across as a genuinely interesting and entertaining in interviews and other appearances. RIP

According to something I read earlier (in the Grauniad so may not be entirely accurate!) Terry Venables married Christine McCann... Knowing the sort of places Leon Griffiths used to frequent, the sort of things footballers liked to do on the afternoon, and El Tel's reputation as a bit of a wheeler-dealer, you start to wonder if there's a bit of a connection...

Very sad news, As a Chelsea fan his playing days were long before I was even born, but always thought of fondly at the Bridge.
Great early memory of mines is watching that QPR team on that ghastly plastic pitch and El Tel's Barcelona losing on pens to Steaua Bucharest in the European cup final after what was in all honesty a shocking final.
He will be missed .

RIP. Very sad news, a very talented player and brilliant manager. England's second greatest manager (after Sir Alf, ofcourse) Writer of 'Hazel' - that fact was mentioned on the news earlier. And a singer ! Which I didn't know.
He was a truly talented man-manager, you could really tell; with the way he treated the young players at Palace; like the brilliant Vince Hilaire, and the equally brilliant Kenny Sansom. When he was interviewed back in the day, by the likes of Brian Moore, I would sit and pay attention, he was clever, insightful and charismatic. I've 'been in his presence' watching Brighton v Palace at the Goldstone Ground in the 70s. I've never particularly been a huge Brighton fan, got drawn-in going along with mates. But I have to admit I liked watching the Palace side when TV was manager in the late 70s; they were inspiring to watch. Some real talent, brilliantly nurtured by TV. And goalkeeper John Burridge was my hero.
(But shh ! don't tell anyone, being a Brighton boy, I'd get beaten-up for saying anything positive about Palace!)
I'm sure TV used to relish bringing his side to the south coast, he was great mates with (then) Brighton Manager Alan Mullery, from when they were at Spurs together.

Great man manager with a positive, enthusiastic can-do attitude who knew how to get the best out of his players such as Gazza. Euro 96 was brilliant. Also did really good work early on in his managerial career at Crystal Palace and QPR. RIP Terry.
