Sea Cruises, loved by some, loathed by others. Where do you stand on this? Are these all they're cracked up to be? What's the attraction of these over say a beach holiday or a city break? To cruise or not to cruise, that is the question.

Not my sort of thing really. Don't like the idea of being cooped up on a boat for long periods. Worried about catching legionnaire's disease, or food poisoning.

Never been on a cruise and would be not be bothered or not if I did, but know a fair few people have gone on them at different levels of luxury and they have had mainly positive stories, great food and drink enjoyable excursions and entertainment on board the one negative which popped up a lot were the stories of being stuck with annoying passengers especially at meal times where dining tables were allocated.

I didn't contribute to this discussion until now as I didn't want to be seen starting a thread to bash sea cruises. However, I agree with everything posted so far.
I once went on a 'mini-cruise' when I moved to live in Majorca, we sailed from Portsmouth to Bilbao. Never again, and after about an hour I just couldn't wait to get orf. Felt dicky for most of it but that wore off eventually. Coming back to the UK about a year later it wasn't so bad though.
I've just never understood the appeal of sea cruises, especially longer ones and I'd love someone to convince me why trying it out is worth it. However when I consider the facts as I see 'em:
(a) possible sea sickness (b) never really seeing the places you sail to other than for a few hours max (c) stuck on a boat with people you are bound to dine with that you may not like (d) horror stories of sickness outbreaks and being stuck in your room (e) any of the above and they ain't cheap either
...they'd have a hard job.
I remember early 2000s my parents went on one with two of their friends. By the end of the trip, they'd got fed up of them dictating times they wanted to come round for a drink in the evening, "your cabin or ours for a few whiskies?" which was just too much for them night after night after night. They never went on another one again and didn't see their friends that often anymore either.
I don't think I'll ever go on a cruise then.
Surely someone on here has been on one and enjoyed it? There must be some positives?

Unfortunately my dadโs sister had the ultimate cruise horror she was a regular cruise goer for about fifteen her and her in laws would go on one every year but one year there was a lot of problems sickness on board, could go on day trips due to port issues and luggage was either stolen or lost. The cruise operator gave them a free cruise as compensation this ship caught fire had total power loss and some crew and the captain abandoned ship leaving the passengers with just a few crew to help them, my aunt got a compensation payout and the cruise company paid for her to have therapy for years unsurprisingly she never went on a boat ship or ferry again.

Now this is exactly the sort of thing I'd be afraid of. Sounds like one of Uncle Albert's terrifying yarns from Only Fools and Horses.

I don't think I ever wanted to go on a cruise ship (even if I had pots of money these cruises are not cheap) just something about being on a large ship with everywhere you go being surrounded by water most of the time and then getting off to view the sites for very short periods of time as you don't get much leisure time in your own pace.
Plus I have seen enough disaster movies to put me off going on one๐๐

I say, Iโve only ever been on short sea journeys..
Iโd love to go on an exclusive cruise. A really fancy one full of rich, classy people like myself. With no riff-raff or common peasants cluttering up the place, their foul offspring making unwanted noise. Evening dress, fine cigars, classic cocktails, that sort of venture. Maybe the odd murder to keep oneโs amusement levels up during the slow bits without the iceberg collisions.
Sounds fun to me.

I have been in three cruises, trust me,I'm not good on boats....
I've been sick traveling on a ferry!from Poole to jersey when I was 16, sick on a ferry from Gibraltar to Morocco when I was 31 ( then again I had washed down a garlic coated swordfish with a litre bottle of ยฃ2.50 brandy in gib the previous evening!)
Even on one of my beloved booze runs across the 21 miles of water to Calais from Dover I turned green!
Even so,my late mum always wanted to go on a cruise, and in February 2009, we got a last minute deal on a cruise around the canaries with Thompson ( now tui ) As other posters here have correctly stated, you don't really get a good chance to see the country you dock in,unless especially as there are various excursions available, but it does however, give you a taster of a place,so you know if you would like to go back there for a proper holiday

Cruises are up two points. Iโm telling you, once we get a murder in the second act, itโll be tied, I bet even Blue Rinse will be gripped to see what happens next and change his vote. My money is either on the two Johnny Foreigners with the dodgy moustaches that keep to themselves and refused to mingle during the cocktail ball, or that stuck up old b!tch with the stole made out of a dead badger in cabin 13. Having said that, I never did trust the clergy and that reverend in Cabin 666 seems far too sanctimonious to be on the level.

I like boats and to travel on boats, but would never do a cruise.
In Aberdeen, they have just built a new harbour at the waterside where I was brought up. This is to accommodate supply ships, but also allow these huge ferries to rock up with tourists, usually from Germany.
Because of this, a much beloved part of our coastline is now out of bounds for us plebs.
The first things tourists see on coming to this new Aberdeen port is a sewarage plant, followed by a huge incinerator.
