Rated by many older players as one of the best players to play the game. I know Johnny Giles says he was the best player he ever saw. Certainly in the top 3 or 4 players from the late 50s to the early 70s. And only Geoff Hurst left from the England 66 team now

Heard this on Sky Football this afternoon. Sir Bobby was certainly a legend, a football man through and through. If someone who has absolutely no interest in football whatsoever and couldn't tell you the first thing about the game heard the name Bobby Charlton, even they would say, 'Wasn't he a footballer?'
RIP.

Too young to have seen him when playing, but in the mid 1970s when I started taking an interest in the game his legend still loomed large, and has only grown ever since. Must be the best English player of all time, did it all. Dementia has claimed a lot of players of his generation, including a number of his 1966 comrades, and his brother Jack also of course, with ex United teammate Denis Law also suffering with the illness, from which there is only slow decline, and as said above now only one of the '66 side surviving still, which is saddening. It was half time yesterday and I was enjoying a beer in the VIP lounge at my local football stadium. Sky sports news was on the t.v there and the sad news flashed up

As part of that 1966 England team he will be long remembered and celebrated. A great footballer and a gentleman. Horrible that his last years were lost to dementia - as someone with a close relative suffering from the condition, I can only view his passing as a mercy. RIP.

The real deal, a true legend on the pitch, and a gentleman and fine ambassador off.
RIP Sir Bobby.

I had noticed that we hadn't heard much from him in recent times, and figured that health problems could be taking their toll.
R.I.P. Bobby Charlton, a footballer who, on the pitch, took us from the 50s Pathe to the 70s action replay era of football, and continued as an authoritative presence ever since.
