Actress best known as Nellie Boswell in Bread, an actress which has left a vast body of work on tv and theatre and was also Glynn Edwards wife in Some Mothers Do Have Them. RIP

Remember her also as the DHSS supremo in Boys From the Black Stuff - a tyrannical old bat at work, but with a grim home life. Almost the complete opposite of Mrs Boswell of course, but an undeniably powerful performance from Jean Boht to elicit sympathy for such an unlikeable character.

Bread was a massive show back in the day. She played a strong matriarchal figure with none of the strident agressive attitude that today's TV would insist on. Long suffering, no nonsense, always looking out for her family. She played it to a tee. RIP Jean.

Appeared in The Sweeney episode Hearts and Minds, alongside the future Freddie Boswell, Ronald Forfar. RIP For me her performance in that was far better than Morecambe & Wise's. This is the first I've heard of her death, I would have thought there would have been far more in the press as Bread was such a huge series and is still regularly repeated on television today. Sadly it does seem hit and miss on how the media reports the death of actors/actresses some passing with little mention. I feel us forum members always do a good job of obituaries of some of the lesser known or forgotten people. Jean was of course fabulous as Nellie Boswell and I'm sure her performance helped to make the show such a success (I can hear her voice shouting "she is a tart"). The one thing I recall from her character was that although tough and often shouting she also displayed a softer sensitive side sometimes reminiscing in a dreamy way (typical of a Carla Lane script). Jean was able to act this two sided character out perfectly. She gave a good performance of a constantly drunk Grandmother in the series 'Skully' (1984) (recommended) I also recall Jean appearing in a very early episode of Grange Hill (S1 E5 1978) as the lady working in the pet shop when Judy Preston needs to buy a replacement school hamster (brilliant episode). Jean Boht & Abigail Brown in Grange Hill RIP
