Very sad to hear, he was slightly before my time but I remember his Christmas shows and his impression of Harold Wilson. I only wish we had impersonators of his calibre now. This genre hasn't been very well represented in the modern era.

Sad to hear of his passing , he was huge in the 70's and getting enormous viewing figures for his Christmas Specials (and deservedly so)
Very talented man who'll be missed RIP Sir

This genre hasn't been very well represented in the modern era. Rory Bremner and Alastair McGowan were on the radio this morning paying tribute - they both said he was a genuinely nice bloke as well as a pioneer in their particular field. There's no denying his popularity in his heyday, to the extent that some of his subjects actually started playing up to the caricature e.g. Dennis Healey. Plus he was more like Harold Wilson than Wilson himself.
I always remember him being on after Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em when Frank is in his angel costume suspended beneath the rescue helicopter as the end credits roll. Then close up of Mike Yarwood in the same outfit doing his Frank impression and saying he'd come back down to watch the show. To my young eyes a seamless piece of television.

RIP. Yes, he was a true master of his craft - unequalled - I would say. Loved watching him back in the day.
And noting a comment by flashchris; comedy is basically dead; the woke brigade have seen to that. All we are left with now is a load of tedious lefties doing standup.

Loved watching Mike Yarwood s shows , they were brilliant . It was as a result of these , that I started doing impressions . Other impressionists came & went , but he will always be " The Pioneer" . R.I.P

R.I.P I always loved "his" Frankie Howerd 🙂 I remember a televised 50th anniversary of the end of WW2 (from The Palladium I think 🤔) where entertainers portrayed popular 40's acts and Mike Yarwood came on right and the end and did a great impression of Max Miller

Mike got his own ITV show in the late-60s, before moving to BBC for a long successful run throughout the 1970s. He was one of those, alongside Morecambe & Wise, Bruce Forsyth and Eric Sykes, who were recruited by ITV as the 80s dawned, and they kept us entertained in their established style for a few more years.
Though in the later 80s, much of this era of comedy stars, e.g., Benny Hill, Terry & June, The Two Ronnies and indeed Mike, were phased-out by the terrestrial TV companies.
We forget how popular Mike was, and it is rather sad that his career did not pick up any old threads, or new strands, to give him TV presence in e.g., the 90s & 00s. I am sure he would be suited to 'Have I got News For You', 'Never Mind The Buzzcocks' and similar.
R.I.P. Mike Yarwood.

So soon after the death of Michael Parkinson. Those two were central figures on 1970s British tv. Both seemed to fade away by the mid 80s although Parkinson came back and was prominent again.
Watching old British election coverage as I have done at times to get to sleep in the past, Mike Yarwood would often appear doing his Harold Wilson, Dennis Healy, Ted Heath etc. It was said that Maggie Thatcher's election saw his popularity decline as he was stumped with her. Only seemed to have the odd appearance on things like HIGNFY since.

I think initially, new impressionists like Phil Cool were a threat to Mike, and then 'Spitting Image' came along and satirised everyone and more that Mike used to impersonate.

A lot of his shows haven't been repeated since he was alive let alone now.😒 RIP Mike.😒 I don't think it's to do with being PC or otherwise, it's just anachronistic and a lot of viewers would have no idea who the characters were. I think the bottom line for all impressionists is that they become famous for "doing" certain characters and when those characters fade away, so do the people who impersonated them. For every Dennis Healy think Rory Bremner with Richie Benaud, Jon Culshaw with George W Bush, Tony Blair, David Beckham and so it goes on. Anyway, MY was before my time but clearly massively changed the way famous people were lampooned on TV and opened the doors for politicians to be fair game. But as others have said, a gentler age. RIP.
