Yes, I remember the Yellow Magic Orchestra getting some evening/weekend Radio One airplay, at a time when a pop-rock musical act from Japan was very unusual in the UK.
R.I.P. Ryuichi Sakamoto.

I liked his work with Japan. The best thing about the film "Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence" was the music. RIP Ryuichi.

Sad to hear the death of Ryuichi Sakamoto not so long after the passing of another YMO member Yukihiro Takahashi. Ryuichi Sakamkto was also a good actor and composed good soundtracks for movies like Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence. I liked the duet he did with Thomas Dolby called Field Work. RIP.

Only just found out about this. Loved his work for Yellow Magic Orchestra and also the music he did with David Sylvian. His soundtrack to The Last Emperpor is wonderful. RIP Ryuichi.

Only discovered this yesterday. I had known he had cancer, but hadn't realised it was so advanced.
YMO were one of the real groundbreaking electronic acts, who I think are overlooked by many, which I think is partly due the the underlying oriental sound their music has.
To me, their music still holds up well today.
He was still doing interesting work right to the end though.
RIP
