We all know Dennis Waterman from 'Minder' and 'The Sweeney', but which of his other regular TV roles i.e. more than one episode did you like the most and why? Included here are only TV series where Dennis appeared more than once as a regular character (also those most likely to have been seen thus 'Fair Exchange' and 'Just William' not included). NOT included here: one-off film appearances or voice roles - film appearances will likely feature in a future death match vote, so let's stick to TV roles for now. Pictured left to right: TOP:- Gerry Standing in 'New Tricks' (99 episodes)
- Frank Costello in 'Moses Jones' (3 episodes)
- John Danson in 'The Knock' (4 episodes)
- John Neil in 'Circle of Deceit'/'Circles of Deceit' (4 episodes)
BOTTOM:- Thomas Gynn in 'Stay Lucky' (27 episodes)
- Tony Carpenter in 'On The Up' (19 episodes)
- Bobbo in 'The Life and Loves of a She-Devil' (4 episodes)
- Mike in 'The Barnstormers' (11 episodes)
So, which did you enjoy the most? Pick TWO!

For me it would be "Stay Lucky" and "New Tricks". Stay Lucky was quite similar to Minder (comedy/drama) and was as far as I could tell filmed entirely on location in places that were new to TV viewers. New Tricks was an enjoyable watch with a good cast and always got hight ratings (I don't understand why it was cancelled since the cast had been refreshed). Having said this neither series are ones that I want to keep watching - something I'm happy to do with Minder and the Sweeney.

For me New Tricks is a good contender but for me it runs out of steam and got a bit stale. I agree entirely about 'Stay Lucky', this is the closest to Terry McCann in another role and I enjoyed it from start to finish. The other one for me is his appearance in 'The Knock' - I know many might not have seen this but personally I think it's very very good. Closest contenders thereafter are 'On The Up' and 'Moses Jones'.

Character based I would say new tricks although as jno says the series did run out of steam, I’ve also put On the up as I liked his character in that, not seen enough of Stay Lucky yet, but the first few episodes I’ve seen it does seem very close to Terry.

I can’t really help here, I never watched Dennis in any of those. Not regularly. In fact the only one of those I’ve completely seen is She-Devil.
Outside of films, one off appearances and Minder and Sweeney, I’ve never really seen much of his stuff. Not really into mainstream shows like say Stay Lucky or New Tricks, not that there’s anything wrong with them from what I have seen mind.
I do think that Circle of Deceit looks good though.

I've gone with Moses Jones, as he's the best thing in it and he does something different with his cockney cheeky chappy personna - Frank Costello's a more ambivalent character than he usually plays and the scene where he beats up the exiled African dictator turned toilet attendant is good fun. Honourable mention for Bobbo in Lives and Loves of a She Devil.

Just William. As with Arch, I'll admit that I don't recall watching ANY of those shows mentioned. However, I have been told more than once that Circles of Deceit was very good and Dennis was very good in it. So, since it has yet to receive a vote...

Is The Knock about a group of customs & excise people or something else? If it's the former than I have heard of it and enjoyed it.
EDIT UPDATE.
Yes this does look like it was that series and this is a top show worth getting imo, I just do not recall Dennis being in this.
Here is a clip with Dennis in it (bad PQ)

I have all of these and have to say, it's a great show with a superb 90s vibe just like 'Thief Takers'. I'd hazarda guess that 'The Knock' will definitely appeal to alnost everyone on this forum. We have a thread on the series here: minder.proboards.com/thread/2216/Dennis-waterman-knock-1997

I have to confess I haven't seen all of these series but I have watched 'New Tricks' and generally think that is very good, at least with the original cast. It starts to go downhill when James Bolam leaves and towards the end is a bit dull, but generally it is good and Dennis is good throughout. I also remember watching 'She Devil' when it was on and I thought that was excellent. So I have gone for those two.

I have to confess I haven't seen all of these series That clearly needs to be rectified then. One problem with 'The Knock' is that you probably need to start from series 1 as it is such a good show.

Dennis is great in 'On The Up' and it's a quality 90's BBC sitcom. He plays Tony Carpenter a self made millionaire who owns a successful limousine hire business but started out with a Ford Cortina and a phone in the pub, he lives in a big house in Esher with his on/off wife, chauffeur, secretary and cook (who are his closest friends much to his wife's annoyance). A brilliant main cast with Sam Kelly, Joan Sims, Jenna Russell, Judy Buxton and Fiona Mollison. Currently all three series on DVD (new) on Amazon for £8.99 (bargain) linkForum thread here link

His 3rd best series after Minder and Sweeney was definitely Circles of Deceit. He is at his best playing a tough guy role. New Tricks and Stay Lucky are the best of his "softer" roles, in that order.
