I can’t believe she stopped being speaker so long ago (2000!!). It seems like only the other year she was still doing that. I couldn’t believe her age either! How did Betty get to 93?
RIP Betty.

A formidable lady, and a fine speaker - didn't put up with any nonesense from grandstanding MPs. That some of her successors have been so lacklustre only serves to set her time in the role into sharp relief.

We need more like her in parliament. RIP Betty. Fearsome and fearless. Didn't take cr*p from anyone. And scrupulously impartial in a way that a certain successor never was, especially towards the end. Since then, Sir Lindsay Hoyle seems to have the qualities of Betty Boothroyd - strong but compassionate. But then he's a northerner like Betty - even if, from a Yorkshireman's point of view, he's from the "wrong" side of the Pennines.
