Just heard the sad breaking news that Motty has died. One of, if not the, most iconic commentator of all time. RIP John.

Sad news, what with Dickie Davies last week and Motty today. Motty was a voice of my childhood (and later) soccer interest, along with Barry Davies. RIP

The two most memorable moments ( loads more) was the one where he was in the snow and most iconic commentary on Ronnie Radford's FA Cup goal🙂 RIP Motty a true legend.

Another brick in the wall of our childhoods has gone missing. Could always listen to a John Motson commentary.

Apparently he spent his last evening watching football in his local pub and was planning to be back the following night or at the weekend. 77 is no age these days but there are far worse ways to go than in your sleep after a very fulfilling life.
I had the pleasure of meeting and having a drink with him in about 1995 at some final for the local team John used to play for many years previously. I think I've posted about it on here somewhere - he was a really normal guy, turned up in a Ford Mondeo and happily chatted football with anyone who wanted to. He was the founder/life president of the team and every year they had a football tour/jolly that he used to go on and they all said what a normal guy he was.
Nobody called him 'Motty' - that was in public. He was 'John'. I tried to get out of him what team he supported, and when he wouldn't be drawn, I asked what team he supported as a kid. He wouldn't have it but his friend told me he grew up as a Chelsea fan but shhhhhh don't tell anyone, so I didn't. RIP John.

To put his longevity into context I was 9 years old when Hereford beat Newcastle in 1972 and was 55 when he retired in 2018. Always managed to find the right words to describe the key moments in the biggest games. RIP Motty.
