The guitarist/singer/songwriter and leader of New York CBGBs band Television has died aged 73. Anyone around my age (60) and into music at the time will appreciate the huge impact Television had in the late 70s when they released the classic Marquee Moon album in 1977 and the great (but somewhat maligned at the time) follow up Adventure in 1978. Television never sold many records but they and he were hugely respected by other musicians of the era. RIP

A massive influence on many of the bands of my youth, not least Echo & The Bunnymen who included a great version of ‘Friction' in their covers set in 1985. Brian Eno famously (and erroneously) said that The Velvet Underground only sold 30 000 copies of their first album but everyone who bought it went out and formed a band. I would venture that Television had a similar impact with Marquee Moon.
RIP.

Only bought the Marquee Moon album on CD recently. Despite being into one of the other CBGB bands, Talking Heads, I'd never tried Television. Really liked it. Really sad to hear that Tom Verlaine has gone.

Oh no. RIP.
Love Television.
Marquee Moon (the track) is a masterpiece, way ahead of its time. And basically a blueprint for any and every indie band that ever existed.
